4 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, May 23, 2007 Council requests developer to reconsider using `The Glen' name 530 Guelph Street (Hwy. 7 & Winston Churchill Blvd.) CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Calling it a form of cultural identity theft, Ward 2 Councillor Joan Robson called on Halton Hills council to pass a resolution asking developer Intracorp to reconsider the naming of its newest subdivision, "The Glen", located within the town hamlet of `The Glen'. Robson referred to it as a David and Goliath issue between generations of Glen Williams residents and a multi-million company, who has usurped the colloquial name of the hamet to market its new 91-lot housing subdivision located above the main part of the village. "I think it's a form of cultural identity theft, that's what I think," said the councillor, who has lived for many years in The Glen. The resolution, approved by council, states its strong objection to Intracorp's selection of the name, and offers to assist the company in selecting a new name. The resolution would not be binding on the company. Robson said that some of the Glen Williams residents and Town of Halton Hills residents object vehemently to the name selection, and the resulting animosity could lead to divisiveness when the new residents arrive. "I know there are a lot of people in the Glen who are very upset. I have encountered them personally and I've received the phone calls and the e-mails, and I would like to show council's support for those people," she said. "They're not creating a marketing tool but a confusion tool," said Ward 2 Councillor Bryan Lewis, who as a lifelong resident has always known Glen Williams to be `The Glen'. I think it's very unfair marketing from someone new to our community and not a very good way to start." Growing up in the Glen, Ward 4 Councillor Bob Inglis said he's fully supportive of the resolution, especially the wording, "strong objection." Last week, on behalf of council, Mayor Rick Bonnette sent a letter to Intracorp asking for reconsideration. The mayor admitted he sent the letter after reading the company president's comments in The Independent & Free Press last week. "The president didn't really understand the importance," said the mayor. "I just hope now they'll listen when we speak as a resolution of council, and as far as I am concerned that's an even stronger message."
