Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, June 6, 2007 9 Event marks 20th anniversary of Hansen's tour Wheels In Motion for Sunday To help mark the 20th anniversary of Canadian Rick Hansen's Man In Motion World Tour in a wheelchair, a local group welcomes residents to donate and participate in an event this Sunday at the Gellert Recreation Centre in Georgetown South. Participants can run, walk, cycle, in-line skate or transport themselves most any way they wish through the paths at the complex over the 10-km distance or over a shorter 500m loop, collecting pledges to donate to Hansen's on-going Wheels In Motion fundraising efforts. Teams of able-bodied folk are also being encouraged to sign up for the Wheelchair Relay and organizers are hopeful that publicity about the challenges facing disabled persons is generated. "Yes, we're raising money, but more importantly we want to raise awareness in the community that so many areas need to be addressed as far as accessibility goes," said Bill Leslie, chair of the local Wheels In Motion campaign, which is overseen by the Halton Hills Accessibility Advisory Committee. "We really just want people to come out for the morning to get an understanding of what we're trying to do, whether they donate money or not. And we would encourage people with disabilities to attend and make themselves known to us if they already haven't." Last year's Wheels In Motion event in Halton Hills raised $14,000 and Leslie is optimistic that total can be surpassed. Hansen traveled more than 40,000 km through 34 countries from 1985-87 on his mission to find a cure for spinal cord injury and to create awareness about accessibility for disabled persons. The Rick Hansen Foundation has raised more than $178 million for spinal cord injury-related programs and initiatives, while also making communities across Canada more accessible and inclusive for such injury victims.
