Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, July 4, 2007 17 SPORTS & LEISURE Golf roundup Final-four showing again for Lapointe at Star Amateur After losing to Georgetown's Mary Ann Lapointe in last year's semifinals, Karly Pinder of Exeter, Ont. proved some points at this past week's Toronto Star Women's Amateur tournament held at the Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club. Pinder downed Lapointe 6 & 5 in Friday morning's final-four match and then won the championship to cap a dominant week for the 21-yearold Iowa State University student. The 47-year-old Lapointe was able to continue her remarkable streak of making it to at least the semifinals of match play in every year the Toronto Star Amateur has been held since its founding in 2000. The North Halton club member won the tourney in 2001 and 2006, losing in the finals in 2002 and 2004. Lapointe recovered from a firstround 81 in stroke play to qualify for the championship flight when the 16-player head-to-head format began Thursday. "I really enjoy match play," she told the Toronto Star. "It doesn't matter where you qualify, you have to win four matches." ··· Ryan Putnam of Georgetown had a 1-1 record against U.S. competition in the two rounds of fourball match play for Team Canada at the Canadian Junior Golf Association's Ryder Cup-style Mizuno North America Cup early this week at the Weston Golf & Country Club. Putnam teamed with Aaron Little of Canwood, Sask. to beat their American opponents 2 & 1 on Tuesday after dropping a match alongside Taylor Smith of Swift Current, Sask. 2 & 1 in round one Monday. Final-round singles matches are scheduled for today with Canada leading 9-5. ··· Settling down after an openinground 82, 16-year-old Luke Ovenden of Georgetown finished up with scores of 72 and 74 to place in a tie for 14th at the RCGA's CN Future Links Prairie Championship at the Minnedosa Country Club in Manitoba. Ovenden ended up at 12 over par through 54 holes, with the winner checking in at minus eight. ··· Georgetown's Ryan Biehn finished tied for third in the boys' 11-12 division of the Canadian Junior Golf Association's tour event at the Deer Run Golf Club in Little Britain after shooting a round of 79. The 12-year-old Biehn's brother Callum also placed third at a CJGA tourney in Bracebridge, carding an 88 in the boys' 9-10 category. The Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first-round best-of-5 Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B playoff series and will host game two tonight (Wednesday) at the Mold-Masters SportsPlex starting at 8 p.m. Photo by Eamonn Maher Bulldogs blast Buzz 9-3 in playoff series opener EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Hardly looking like the underdogs, the Halton Hills Bulldogs posted their first road win against the Oakville Buzz in over three years to take a 1-0 series lead in their Ontario Lacrosse Association's Jr. B league openinground playoff matchup. Brandon Goodfellow broke a 3-3 tie with six minutes remaining in the second period on a soft goal that went through Oakville netminder Cam Watts' legs and the fifth-place 'Dogs proceeded to shut down the Buzz offence from there, scoring five times in the final frame. Halton Hills goalie Manny Hundal further frustrated the hosts with some excellent saves and by setting up two of his team's goals. Mike Brown and Evan Whillans netted two goals apiece for the Bulldogs, with singles added by Nic Grasby, Mike Burke, Kyle Davis and Greg Henry. Grasby also picked up three assists on the evening. Fourth-place Oakville has eliminated Halton Hills in the past two post-seasons but didn't have any returning players from last year's Founders Cup national championship squad and the Bulldogs appeared to be the more composed side in the opening contest. The Buzz took 29 penalty minutes to the Bulldogs' 14. Game two of the best-of-five series will be played tonight (Wednesday) at Georgetown's Mold-Masters SportsPlex starting at 8 p.m., with game three Friday in Oakville Glen Abbey Rec Centre at 8 p.m. If a fourth game is required, the Bulldogs will host it Sunday at 7 p.m. at the SportsPlex Game five would be played Monday night in Oakville. The four-day break in the series allowed for three of the Bulldogs to try out over the weekend for the 2008 Canadian men's under-19 field lacrosse team in Mississauga. J.J. Laforet, Daniel Patterson and Burke took part in the workouts, as did Georgetown resident Cameron Flint, who plays for the Brampton Jr. A Excelsiors. Andrews headed for Pan-Ams Georgetown resident Kaitlyn Andrews has earned a spot at the Pan-American Junior Track & Field Championships for the third year in a row and will compete for Canada in the shot put event held in Sao Paolo, Brazil later this week. The 18-year-old Andrews recently completed her freshman year at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas as a member of the school's varsity field team and owns a personal-best throw of 14.70 metres in the shot put, achieved at an indoor meet. Scholastically, the kinesiology major was named to the Dean's list in both semesters. Last year, the seven-time OFSAA medalist competed at the world junior championships in Beijing, China and in 2005 took part in her first Pan-Am juniors in Windsor. This is the Acton High School grad's last year of junior eligibility. S Summer Edition is Here!
