Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, July 4, 2007 5 OMB gives approval to Catholic cemetery CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer In a decision last week, the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) approved zoning and Official Plan amendments to allow a new Catholic cemetery to be located on 17 Sideroad. Both Halton Hills and Halton Regional councils earlier this year gave their support to the project, but not soon enough for the Catholic Cemeteries of the Diocese of Hamilton, which had appealed the proposal to the OMB. The 42-acre cemetery will be located on the north side of 17 Sideroad, west of Trafalgar Rd. It's adjacent to the Trafalgar Sports Park. Due to delays resulting from the provincial implementation Greenbelt legislation and the Environmental Assessment study of Trafalgar Rd., which suggested a potential bypass around Stewarttown, the Diocese appealed to the OMB for a decision. However the Halton Agriculture Advisory Committee recommended the land, considered to be within Prime Agriculture Area, remain in farm production. The Diocese intends to convert the land on a gradual basis so that agriculture can continue on part of the site for as long as possible-- over a period of 50 years. At the OMB hearing, Town planner David Vander Berg testified that the cemetery use is compatible with agricultural uses and meets the standards set out in the 1997 Provincial Policy Statement (the document that is in force not the Greenbelt legislation) for non-agricultural uses in prime agricultural areas. Vander Berg agreed with the Diocese there is no alternative land suitable for a cemetery except on prime agricultural land, it was stated in the OMB decision document. Halton Region Health Department advised there must be separation of at least 30 metres between any gravesite and neighbouring wells. No crematorium is planned, nor is it permitted. Junior Achievement Awards Chamber honours business leaders of the future The Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce hosted the Junior Achievement Awards evening recently, which provided an opportunity to celebrate the success of the two Junior Achievement (JA) Companies (JAM Productions and Chaotico) that operated this year in Halton Hills. The Junior Achievement Company Program is JA's signature program, which operates one evening a week for 22 weeks throughout the school year. Guided by volunteers (advisors) from the business community, a group of high-school students (achievers) come together to start and run a company for 22 weeks. The program facilitates life lessons for both `achievers' and `advisors', providing them with hands-on entrepreneurial and leadership skills and teaching them the value of the freeenterprise system. At this year's Evening of Excellence event, three winners of trips to the Canadian Junior Achievement National Conference (CANJAC) at John Abbott College in Montreal, Quebec from August 11-17 were announced. The winners were Mike Fargiorgio, Priscilla Tang and Gaby Alanes.
