4 HOMECOMING, Wednesday, July 25, 2007 Georgetown District High School celebrates 120th anniversary During Homecoming weekend July 27-29, there are many reunions taking place, and none will be more exciting than the 120th anniversary of Georgetown District High School. The school will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, with lots of activities for former grads to enjoy. There is no admission fee, so come and explore your old haunts and relive "the good old days". A few years ago, a group of parents, under the auspices of the student and parent council, decided to start a "Building The Memories Campaign" to celebrate the history of GDHS, promote school spirit and promote the school's strengths. Founded in 1887, Georgetown District High School is indeed rich in history. Canada was only 20 years old when it opened! Here is a list of the activities to look forward to at the reunion. Brunch in the Cafeteria: There will be a catered brunch in the cafeteria (a hot and cold buffet) between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be ordered by calling 905-877-6966 and leaving a message at ext. 484. All proceeds from the brunch will go towards the purchase of an electronic sign. "There are a lot of exciting activities at GDHS" says Sue Culp, Chair of the Campaign. "When we have a sign that can be changed on a computer in the office, we can change information in an instant and cover many more aspects of school life." Yearbooks on a CD: If you've lost your yearbooks in the shuffle of moving a few times or if you didn't order one at the time because you didn't think you'd want one in future, you're in luck. Enter former GDHS student Bonnie (Hayes) Courchesne, who Georgetown District High School circa 1940s. has taken every single yearbook and put them on a CD with musical accompaniment for all to own. Besides class pictures, other photos such as team sports and casual photos of students will be captured for you to enjoy at home. The CDs will be on sale for $20 at the reunion. Alumni Hall: There will be a special hall dedicated to alumni of GDHS and you can purchase a brick with an engraved brass plaque for $50 at the reunion. Buy a brick for yourself, or buy one in honour of a special friend, a loved one or a friend who has passed away, a favourite teacher, teammate or coach. School Tours: Volunteers from the current student population will guide former students around the school. Visit the Decade Rooms: Meet and mingle with classmates who went to GDHS in your era. Find out how friendly everyone is, now that nobody is looking for a life partner or trying to be the coolest dresser in town. The GDHS Building the Memories Campaign is looking for volunteers to work on the assembly of memorabilia. Do you have any sports gear, photos or school jackets you'd like to share?
