ENTERTAINMENT Local dance group produces three North American Irish Dance champions The Butler-Fearon O'Connor School, based in Georgetown, Brampton and Kitchener, is now the home to three North American Irish Dance champions. Liam Grant, 9, Michaela Hinds, 12 and Lorcan Balfe, 14, after three rounds of competition, each won their respective age groups, to be crowned national champions. The competition took place in Ottawa and there were competitors from all over the world competing including Australia, Ireland and England. Liam and Michaela were both first-time winners and Lorcan was honored to be crowned champion for the third time. The Butler-Fearon O'Connor School also had many other dancers finish in the top 10 at the Nationals, and as a result, the school finished in the top three for highest placings overall. The dancers were trained by Rose Fearon, Joanne and Fiona Cunningham and Kathy Irvine. Irvine is a Georgetown resident and a two-time world champion who retired from competition after her victories to teach alongside her own dance teacher, Fearon. Together they train, coach and motivate the dancers to perform at their best. As a result of this hard work, two weeks ago the Butler-Fearon O'Connor School also celebrated another victory, Emily Penner, 19, another dancer in the school was crowned British National Champion in England. The Butler-Fearon O'Connor School is currently training and practising for the Eastern Canadian Championships to take place in November. This competition will ultimately qualify them for the World Championships. Irish dancing is offered in Georgetown on Wednesday evenings at the St. Andrew's United Church.
