Recently, Hyundai Canada invited a few journalists to come to their Markham head offices to talk about how slow things are in the industry. The picture they painted was fairly bleak. They said an industry estimate of 800,000 units sold for 1993 is optimistic even though well over a million cars are sold yearly on average. But Hyundai isn‘t all that worâ€" ried. In fact, we were really there to see two new 1993 cars. The two cars in question are the Scoupe twoâ€"door sportyâ€"coupe with Hyundai‘s first designedâ€"inâ€" house engine; and the Elantra, now with a 1.8 motor and a host of detail changes. Trying to keep potential buyers interested is the reasoning behind changes to Elantra even though it‘s onlv one By JIM ROBINSON Special to the Beaver dard on all three models, to enhance traction on wet, snowy and icy roads. I drove both all models of both cars recently on an excursion up to Lake Simcoe and back. The Turbo was noticeably quicker than the base model. It was fast enough to just stay ahead of the 124 hp, 1.8â€" litre equipped Elantra. In many ways it felt like the base version of the Honda Civic del Sol. In this voraciously competitive segment, what you get for the dolâ€" lar is the deciding factor for many buyers and Hyundai knows this well. Well, those days are long gone inside the Elantra. It‘s now sporting fabrics and fittings worthy of bigâ€" brother Sonata. Seating position for the driver is just about Civicâ€"perâ€" fect; another long cry from the Pony. I once spent Saturdays with at a BMW shop which also sold Hyundai Ponys. I just can‘t forget the vinyl seats and thirdâ€"world appointments which made a Skoda look luxurious. Torque is up almost 14 per cent with the new engine and it feels like it. I found the power steering on the GLS to be wispishly light after getting directly out of the Scoupe Turbo. At first, I was overâ€" correcting for the torque steer which is still a problem under sharp acceleration. On the way back from Lake Simceoe, I took the same GLS all the way back and found the steering still light but helped by the 185â€"series tires. Hyundai did a lot of focus group work prior to releasâ€" ing this vehicle so I suppose that‘s what a majority of buyers in this class expect. But I could have used a little more "feel" from the wheel. If the Koreans have learned one thing, it‘s how to get the most out of what they‘ve got and that is nowhere more evident than the interior of the Elantra. Seats are generous in size but so is the head room even in the back seat. Instrumentation has gone from the laughable in the first Pony of eight years ago, to agreeably Saabâ€"like in the Elantra. With the Elantra, Hyundai has recognized sophistication in the economy car segment in not only needed, it‘s vital to keeping market share with the likes of Escort, Saturn, Civic, Altima, and Corolla. As in all Hyundais, the car has a transversely mounted engine at the front driving the front wheels. The Scoupe has a new fiveâ€"speed transaxle. You can get a fourâ€"speed automatic on the base and LS but not the Turbo. Considering price, Scoupe conâ€" tinues to be the price leader in the sporty car class and now has muchâ€" needed power to keep up with its rivals. Suspension on Elantra, and Scoupe for that matter, is MacPherson struts and coils at the front with trailing arms at the rear. I note a 185â€"series tire is offered on the topline version of the 1.8 but I advise having them fitted no matter what model you buy. The car in base GL firm can still be purchased with a 1.6â€"litre, 113 hp fourâ€"cylinder, but Hyundai wants you to look at the new 1.8â€" litre four with 124 hp and 116 torques. The bigger engine sports twin counterâ€"balance shafts to smooth out characteristic fourâ€"cylinder roughness. While the base model comes only with a fiveâ€"speed manâ€" ual, the 1.8 is also offered with an electronic fourâ€"speed automatic. UT UT insmission â€" electronically con olled, with overdrive and htweight torque converter. Wednesday, January 13, 1993
