Budget committee shuffles building services department to save $67,000 The Town of Oakville’s 1993 bud- get committee wants to eliminate three supervisory positions from the building services department in order to save $67,000. Under the reorganization, two supervisors in the inspection section would be assigned other duties in the department, while a third supervisory position, which is currently vacant, would be eliminated The reorganization was discussed behind closed doors at the budget committee meeting, Tuesday night. Effective Jan. 1, 1993, the move would result in a net reduction of $67,000 from the department’s origi- nal $2.55-mi11ion budget request. The committee also approved fur- ther reductions to building services totalling $180,000, to bring the depart- ment’s budget down to $2.24 million. The committee also approved bud- get requests of $1.6-million for the planning services department and $335,000 for the economic develop- ment department. The other two budgets, however, represent slight increases over last year’s budgets for those departments. The committee also approved Humm’s recommendation to add another staff member to the property’s management section at an added cost of $23,000. Because of those savings, Salisbury is recommending the Phase 2C lands study for the River Oaks community be undertaken m 1993, a year ahead of schedule. Planning services director, Ted Salisbury said the Uptown Core's developer, Metrontario, will con- tribute up to $100,000 to organize the competition, if the town provides $50,000 in prize money. Of the town’s portion, $38,500 would be funded by development charges, while the remaining $11,500 would be raised throUgh the tax levy. Salisbuty said the reduced cost of the park design competition will cut $23,000 from the tax levy portion of the planning services department’s capital budget. “Since the budget requirement for the park design competition is less than originally anticipated, staflc would forward other projects so that the tax levy portion of the capital budget is kept relatively constant from year to year,†Salisbury reported.
