Falrview St. (beside Harvey‘s) While many artists aspire to comment on some aspect of life, Ankaret Dean‘s latest exhibition litâ€" erally encompasses the full scope of human existence â€" and beyond. "Gateways," currently at The Blackwood Gallery in Erindale College until Jan. 29, is composed of seven pieces representing seven gateways through which a person passes during their lifetime. The works begin with Childhood then continue on through sculptures labelled Teenage, Young Adult, Parenthood, Midlife, Old Age and finally Spiritual. Like much of Dean‘s previous work, all but one of the pieces â€" which was created in India â€" were formed using found materials choâ€" sen for their "expressive quality." The elements used were dictated by the shapes of the gateways which Dean conceived as drawings before proceeding further. "Then I looked for materials that would best express that age group," she explained. For example, Childhood â€" tightly woven and wombâ€"like â€" required pliable willow. Dean wanted Spiritual to be completely different and discovered the ideal material while in India: fibre (silk, cotton) strands from the Festival of Lights ‘n 5 s3 Y Y\ 441 she used while in a convent to creâ€" ate her sculpture. "All I knew was that I wanted to do it in India. I was very fortunate I found (the materials)" said Dean. Most of the time Dean finds what she needs in the landscape surâ€" rounding her home. Leaves, branchâ€" es, bark, virtually nothing is considâ€" ered superfluous and it is this organâ€" ic quality which invests Gateways with its poignancy. Unlike archways of brick and steel, these works remain as ephemeral as the human lives they seek to portray. ""You don‘t have to have expenâ€" sive or precious materials to be an artist," said Dean, who responded to this latest chance to exhibit with enthusiasm. "I knew the space and was looking for something three dimensional. I wanted to explore the expressive nature of the materiâ€" als. It‘s a real challenge when peoâ€" ple ask you to do an exhibition, to come up with something new and challenging." The finished pieces owe a great debt to their original sketches since each resembles nothing more than an expressive line drawing. In Young Adult, for example, two spare columns of trees lean toward each other but barely touch. "At that age, you don‘t need a nest," said Dean. The seven stages of life seem a natural for someone who can draw inspiration from a big family encompassing four generations. Dean maintains most people don‘t don‘t realize they‘ve passed through a gateway until after it happens so it helps to have some years under your belt. "At the great age of 60 perhaps I can be a bit more astute," she laughs. Even so, Old Age was the hardâ€" est piece to complete, the only one Dean couldn‘t completely visualize before starting.
