Milton preacher says militant gay group behind death threat By ROB KELLY Special to the Beaver Milton fundamentalist preacher Ken Campbell has asked police to investigate after a death threat was phoned into his home last Saturday. Campbell condemned the call as "cowardly" and a degeneration into "bully scare tactics." While Campbell attended a conâ€" ference in Toronto, he recounted, his wife Norma received two abusive, anonymous calls. The first stated that "Satan is going to come and visit" the outspoken preacher. The second warned her that her husband would be killed. Following. Saturday‘s incidents, Reverend Campbell wrote Metro Toronto Police Chief William McCormack to complain about an anonymous letter he had seen two weeks earlier, which advocated harassing those perceived as opposing gay rights, including Reverend Campbell. The unsigned letter is billed as representing a group _ called Q U A L A D A * (The Queer Ken Campbell Action League Against Defamation). The writer also claims QUALADA is an "anonymous" organization. The twoâ€"page text advocates vanâ€" dalism and harassment of people, media, political parties, and religious organizations deemed hostile to the homosexual community. Among those on the target are the Toronto Sun newspaper, the Catholic church, the Reform and Family Coalition political parties, and Campbell. The letter suggests vandalizing Toronto Sun paper boxes by such methods as pouring quickâ€"drying glue into the coin mechanisms. Included in the QUALADA text is a list of phone numbers with Campbell‘s at the top. Next to his name, in brackets, is a notation readâ€" ing "we all know this monster." The letter recommends readers "call our enemies and tell them off," preferably "late at night and as often as possiâ€" ble." It‘s puzzling that there has not been more of a backlash against the letter writers, Campbell said Thursday. "I‘m astonished there isn‘t as much of an outcry from the (politiâ€" cal) left as when the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) came to Georgetown." Ku Klux Klan supporters staged a small march through downtown Georgetown last weekend. Reverend Campbell billed the QUALADA letâ€" ter "as vicious as KKK literature." Campbell said he hopes more rational homosexual rights advocates will step forward and denounce the QUALADA text. "It would be most helpful if those who represent a responsible voice for the homosexual community would disavow this." * Rick Kedzior Branch Manager Oakville Mississauga Wednesday, Friday and Sunday 845â€"3824 serving Oakville every _ TOWNE _: CHEVâ€"OLDS Trafalgar/Cross THURSDAYp JANUARY 28th, 1993 1:30 p.m.â€"8 p.m. SPONSOR: TM HORTONS 60 Lakeshore Rd.
