On Jan. 14th Scheel finally received a written response from Williams explaining why his office requested a copy of his nomination form on the morning of the 1991 municipal election. "It is my opinion that the response from Mr. Williams is totally inadeâ€" quate and his actions cannot be justiâ€" Trustee not satisfied with explanation why his nomination papers sought by chairman In his response, Williams, who was absent from the meeting, said the information was sought on behalf of former board chairman Bill Harrison. Oakville â€" resident _ Elaine Nielsen,an Oakvilleâ€"Trafalgar High School relocation opponent, is simiâ€" larly dissatisfied with a response Williams provided her on the same Labelling the issue "subversive" and a "pull away from the democracy of this board or any other," Scheel, said he intends to "swing the cat by the tail until it understands it did something wrong." This is patently ridiculous. Errors, if any, could have been corâ€" rected without my nomination papers. I contend that the only purpose for the actions taken and support offered was to discredit me by my association with Mrs. Nielsen, irrespective of whether I had anything to do with the Nikiforuk column," wrote Scheel. After the nomination form was requested by the board on the mornâ€" ing of the election, it was forwarded to the Globe and Mail, on Dec. 20th, 1991 after Nielsen informed the newspaper she was seeking a press council hearine. Williams explanation did little to appease Nielsen and Scheel. At the board meeting, Scheel reminded trustees of that and wrote, "Please understand that Mr. Nikiforuk‘s column was essentially entirely accurate. There were no errors. The information provided by Mrs.. Nielsen was wellâ€"researched and mostly on Halton Board of Education letterhead. Many of Mr. Nikiforuk‘s statements have subseâ€" quently been proven correct through rulings of the Press Council and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Individual Privacy Act people, as well as retractions of stateâ€" ments made by several newspapers and/or their editors." On Nov. 8, 1991(several days before the election) the Globe Mail published a Facts Arguments Fifth Column written by Andrew Nikiforuk in which the board was criticized based on information provided to Nikiforuk by Nielsen. The column was swiftly rebutted by Williams who was given space in the column Feedback, four days later, Nov. 12th, 1991 â€" the day of the municipal election. The rebuttal column saw Williams refer to "a noisy and often nasty little group of Oakville residents" and statâ€" ed "Mrs. Nielsen is on the election team of a trustee candidate in Oakville who is running against an incumbent trustee." The issue centres around Nielsen‘s discovery through a Freedom of Information Act request for informaâ€" tion on file about herself that the board had obtained a copy of Scheel‘s nomination papers. Nielsen was one of the people who signed Scheel‘s nomination papers. In a reply to Nielsen dated Dec. 18th, Williams wrote, "The form was requested at the direction of the chair of the board, Bill Harrison. He required it as part of the verifying information in dealing with the ediâ€" tors of the Globe and Mail with regard to Mr. Nikiforuk‘s column." | Cabinet Warchouse Please be advised that incorrect hours appeared in the Wed., Jan. 20th ad placed in the Oakville Beaver.
