Oakville‘s Chris Pridham and Tennis Canada are at loggerheads over the way the country‘s Davis Cup team is being run. dled.” Specifically. the way it‘s being run by Davis Cup captain Pierre Lamarche of Burlington. Pridham, Canada‘s topâ€"ranked male tennis player, wants Lamarche removed because of the latter‘s coaching style and philosoâ€" phy. And to show his disapproval Pridham is boycotting next month‘s Cup World Group qualiâ€" fying tie in Mexico, Feb. 5â€"7 after he was originally invited to play by Lamarche last week. Pridham made his views offiâ€" cial late last week at the Australian Open _ championships _ in Melbourne, where he lost in the second round to Austrian Alex Antonitsch in four sets. "It‘s a combination of things," said Pridham from his Oakville home, Monday. "I just didn‘t like the way things were being hanâ€" Acting on advice of Tennis Canada president Bob Moffatt, Pridham declined to comment furâ€" ther. Chosen for the Mexico trip were Andrew Sznajder and Daniel Nestor of Toronto, Brian Gyetko of Welland, Sebastien Lareau of Boucherville, Que and Sebastien LeBlance of St. Bruno, Que. Lamarche suggested Pridham had been holding a grudge against him ever since he chose Nestor over Pridham in last February‘s tie Tennis star quits team over dispute with coach CATCH THE EXCITEMENT / Sports trivia...Box No. 5239 Sports picks...Box No. 5240 Sheridan College.... Not so, says Pridham, who claims he met with Bettauver perâ€" sonally in November to discuss his feelings about Lamarche. "We‘ve had a little bit of falling out (since). Our relationship has been like a rollercoaster." "He was the guy who created the Allâ€"Canadian academy and I‘m still a part of it. It was his biggest contribution to Canadian tennis. Ranked No. 100 on the Association of Tennis Professionals computer entering the Open, Pridham says he and Tennis Canada have been in disâ€" cussion since returning to Oakville Friday night and a resolution will be forthcoming. "I think we‘ll be able to sort things out," Pridham said. Pridham, however, maintains that as long as Lamarche stays, he will never play Davis Cup again. "I‘d still love to be involved in Davis Cup, but not as long as Pierre is there," said Pridham, who holds a 3â€"5 Cup singles record. nis player to represent fus country. "If it wasn‘t for him, I wouldn‘t be the player I am," said Robertson, who goes by the names of Baby Refrigerator, Elevator and Funnel. "Even when I was in public school, the kids there would be talking about my brother. I wasn‘t really a natural (in public school). I was the second guy off the bench. ‘"My parents (Ena and Isiash) were not really into basketball at first. They just wanted us to do well in school. After what happened to Wayne, they really got into it. We‘re proud of him." Then he proudly talks about younger brother Ricky, 13, who plays basketball at E.J. James Public School in Oakville. "Ricky is better than I was at that age," he claims. He‘s a little uncomfortable with the fact his talent draws extra attention to himself. Argqund others he‘s so quiet one might forget he‘s even around. Actually, Robertson used to be a loquacious sort but that all stopped one day. "When I was younger, I talked all the time," recalls Robertson, who has two brothers (Greg, 22, who works in Toronto, and Clayan, 17, who attends Queen Elizabeth Park). "I had a comâ€" ment for everything. I‘d ask all sorts of questions: ‘Why does this happen?" ‘What‘s this?" ‘What‘s that?‘ Then one day my brother and uncle told me to shut up." And so he did. But you don‘t have to twist any arms to get others to vouch for his talents. "Andy leads by example," says Devils coach Peter Roser. Blakelock coach Jim Noble, who has seen many players come and go in Halton, recalls only one player â€" O‘Neil Bailey, a center for QEP in the late 1970sâ€"â€" who could rival Robertson. "When we play (OT) all the kids are really intimidated," Noble © said. "He‘s tends to be in a class all by himself. You don‘t get many like that." among them. His size and jumping ability makes him particularly noticeable in rebounding and defending. Says Noble, "I think his defensive presâ€" ence is more significant than his offensive presence. "He jumps so well and he‘s so powerful that he can knock guys over like bowling pins. Either he‘ll block shots or change them. Roser says that because of Robertson‘s windowâ€"cleaning, OT is able to employ a twoâ€"man frontline compared to the traditional threeâ€"man unit.
