"When we held our first meeting we thought either no one would show or we‘d be surprised," said The club began in 1991 â€" the 25th Anniversary of Star Trek â€" after Armstrong and MacDonald enjoyed a Caribbean cruise with 20 stars and writers from the show. (Among them was series creator Gene Roddenberry who died only months later.) They also met memâ€" bers from Star Trek fan clubs who inspired the pair to "fill the hole in the Oakville area" by starting their own club. The appeal in a nutshell, says Armstrong, is simply the escapism offered by stories about an optiâ€" mistic future cast through the prism of modern day concerns. As such, Star Trek (in all its incarnations) is of value to just about everyone â€" no matter when you were born. Armstrong, a "serious" collector of memorabilia from the series, is Captain of the U.S.S. Trafalgar, Oakville‘s Star Trek fan club which he and First Officer Rod MacDonald launched a year and a half ago. Highly organized and active, the club has more than 50 enthusiastic members ranging from public schoolers to young adults. James Armstrong may have been born after the original Star Trek went off the air but that never stopped him from becoming more than your average fan. After all, anyone familiar with the legendary TV show knows that boundaries between past, present and future are meant to be broken. Although Armstrong correâ€" sponds with clubs from Australia to England, the U.S.S. Trafalgar remains nonaffiliated with the North American (Starfleet) or global (International Federation of Trekkers) organizations. When formed, each club takes as it name the designation of a starâ€" ship. "Trafalgar" is easily associated with Oakville but upon further research Armstrong uncovered a surprise: the first ship Oakville founder William Chisholm built in the harbor was named â€" you guessed it. "When we held our first meeting we thought either no one would show or we‘d be surâ€" prised ... We were surprised." Armstrong, who runs the Comic Connection on Kerr Street. "We were surprised. The club‘s gaming department is also planning to continue its charity fundraising activities. The club received a unique and unexpected compliment after Armstrong and company met writer Michael Jan Friedman at a recent Star Trek convention. After speakâ€" ing to Friedman â€" who authors Next Generation novels â€" Armstrong sugâ€" gested he work the U.S.S. Trafalgar into his next book "Relics." The writer did one better. When the book came out one character â€" the captain of the Jenolen â€" was named James Armstrong. "I last until Page 28 ... then I‘m suffocated on the bridge," he laughs. "This is good practice because they have competitions at convenâ€" tions," says Armstrong, who explains that at these affairs gaming usually goes on all weekend 24 hours a day. "There are so many sides to the hobby." One popular component of the monthly meetings are battle simulaâ€" tions comparable to Dungeons and Dragons using space maps, miniaâ€" ture spacecraft and dice. ing tâ€"shirts of Armstrong‘s design complete with the motto "We‘re looking for a few good beings."
