AIC financial seminars Sheet BUSINESS "There is no room for mistakes," says Johnston, adding that service is another aspect of the business she can‘t stress enough. "People are not going to accept anything but professionalism and results." Even with light at the end of the economic tunnel Johnston isn‘t about to lose the lessons she‘s learned and exudes a sense of pride that her company has survived. "We‘ve been very fortunate. We‘ve ridden the recession out, so to speak and we‘ve seen Strangely enough, the lack of competition hasn‘t really helped the bottom line since the recession has forced many potential clients to cut back. Ironically, Johnston says times were most profitable when there were a score of agencies vying for business. The result is that Adcom is now a "lean and mean" company with a small, eightâ€"person staff. This helps keep costs down and enables her to offer customers â€" half of whom are builders and developers â€" a "sensible price." The tough times have prompted other changes at Adcom. Johnston says the funds to experiment with new ideas just don‘t exist and so her staff has become "very astute" at identifying markets and maximizing their Johnston has seen her share of corporate mortality in the last several years, particularly in the marketing and promotion field. Of the 20 agericies that existed in the Toronto area during the industry‘s midâ€"Eighties heyday, only four are still around. Oakvilleâ€"based Adcom is one of the survivors. "It hasn‘t been good times for the agency side," said Johnston. The recession is a cross every business has been forced to bear but as Adcom president Janice Johnston explains it, that which doesn‘t kill you makes you stronger.
