Summaries of the reasons for the proposed designations are set out in Schedule "A" to this notice. A detailed Heritage Structure Report of each property may be obtained at the Clerk‘s Department, Oakville Municipal Building, 1225 Trafaigar Road, during regular business hours. Notice of objection to the proposed designations, setting out the reason for the objection and all relevant facts, may be served on the Clerk of the Corporation of the Town of Oakville, within 30 days from the 15th day of January, 1993, being the date upon which this notice was first published in the Oakville Beaver newspaper. JUDITH MUNCASTER TOWN CLERK _ THE TOWN OF OAKVILLE SCHEDULE "A" 10 BURNET STREET was built in the midâ€"1870‘s by Alfred Maples. The property was originally owned by the large Montreal mercantile firm of Forsythe, Richardson and Company. Owners of the property include Willett G. Miller, Henry W. Floria, Captain James Quinn, one of Oakville‘s most famous mariners and Henry Prior Farr Jr. whose family would own the property from 1890 to 1950. Most of the heritage features of the house remain intact. It is an excellent representation of the type of housing constructed by Oakville‘s working people on the west bank of the Sixteen Mile Creek. 38 BURNET STREET was built in 1855 by Michael Quinn. The simple frame dwelling is an example of the Oakville vernacular style with its 1 1/2 storey rectangular plan, narrow horizontal siding and symmetrical window composition. The house is an excellent representation of the type of housing (éonslt(ructed by Oakville‘s working people on the west bank of the Sixteen Mile reek. 59 CHISHOLM STREET was built in 1874 by Thomas James Cavan. Thomas was a carpenter who helped to build some of the many fine ships which came from the Oakville Shipyard. The house is a simple vernacular expression of the Gothic Revival Style with its window located in the centre gable above the main door. The original rear, lakestone basement remains intact and the original windows, porch and roofline remain the same. 142 FORSYTHE STREET was built probably between 1857 and 1859 by Henry Gulledge. This simple vernacular style building with square plan is 1 1/2 storeys high and has a saltbox roof line and is similar to many tradesmen‘s modest dwellings built at the time. At the corner of Forsythe and Rebecca, the Gulledge House provides a gateway feature into Forsythe Street where other significant heritage structures exist. 159 LAKESHORE ROAD EAST was built in 1910 and has been known since 1922 as the Bank of Montreal. The building is an example of the Beaux Arts style of architecture which was typical for many bank buildings during the early part of this century and retains much of its original form, scale and detailing. Features that have been retained include the "temple like" frontal pilasters, deep moulded entablature and pediment, buff brick facade, keystones and the Coat of Arms of the Merchants Bank over the main entrance. 166 LAKESHORE ROAD EAST was built in 1921 by the Bank of Toronto (later renamed The Torontoâ€"Dominion Bank), and has remained under the ownership of that financial institution ever since. The land on which the building sits today was the site of the home of the founder of Oakville, Colonel William Chisholm, and the stores of William F. Romain and Henry Gulledge. On its corner sitting, it stands as a good example of an institutional building for the period and contributes to the detail, character, quality, and variety along the Main Street. 179â€"181 LAKESHORE ROAD EAST was purchased in 1921 by Edward Percival Lunau, and within one year he commissioned the building of the Lunau Block. Prior to this construction, the property had been the site of Oakville‘s second post office for fortyâ€"seven years. The building represents a commercial architectural style of the 1920‘s, based on a simple yet formal design of "Italianate" influence and has retained its basic form and detailing. Notable features include the windows on the upper facade with stone lintels and sills, and a date stone with "Lunau Block 1922" carved on it. , 183 LAKESHORE ROAD EAST was built in 1903 in conjunction with the adjacent and similarly styled Davis Block (187â€"189 Lakeshore Road East) as a multiple occupant commercial structure. The most notable occupant of the building over the years was the Byers Drug Store. During the years between the First and Second World Wars, part of the upper level was occupied by Dr. F. Murray Deans. From 1941â€"1944, Dr. Deans was Mayor of Oakville and in 1948 he was a Liberal candidate for the Provincial Legislature. The building is an important contributor to the downtown streetscape and in conjuction with the buildings on either side, from 179â€"195 Lakeshore Road East, forms part of an uninterrupted heritage streetscape. 184â€"186 LAKESHORE ROAD EAST was one of the first commercial buildings to be built in Oakville and was known for over fifty years as the William Joyce General Store. The building was originally built in 1835 by Richard Tucker. At the same time, Dr. John Urquhart was building his adjoining "Medical Hall" at 182 Lakeshore Road East. Today, over 156 years later, these two buildings still stand side by side, with many of their original features intact. The building is a good example of the "Oakville Vernacular® style of the early 1830‘s. It retains its general form, symmetrical facade, moderate sloping roof and front gable, reminiscent of the "Classical Revival" style. 189Aâ€"191 LAKESHORE ROAD EAST was constructed on the site of William Busby‘s garden in 1914 and continues many of the architectural features and detail found on the adjacent Davis Block (c. 1903). The building forms a typical "main street" facade of the early 1900‘s and is of the Italianate style. 189Aâ€"191 Lakeshore Road East, together with 187â€"189 Lakeshore Road East, stands as a good example of a building type best suited to a total streetscape. 1189 LAKESHORE ROAD EAST was built in 1886 by the Morrison Brothers. Some of the original farm land and buildings still remain today as part.of Lawson Park. The fine Victorian farmhouse is an excellent example of the Victorian Gothic Revival style. 1493 LAKESHORE ROAD EAST was built in 1844 by Joshua Leach. The 1 1/2 storey cottage is an example of the Georgianâ€"style and still retains much of the fine detail and workmanship of its master buildér.
