He was my hero and he still is," said Heath‘s nephew, Halton Regional Police Professional Standards Bureau Det. Sgt. Ted Waller. Heath died of unknown causes at the Mississauga nursing home where he‘d lived the last two years since suffering a stroke. A formal police funeral, complete with Halton Regional Police honor guard, was held this (Friday) morning for Edward Heath â€" a 34â€"year veteran of the Oakville and Halton Regional Police forces â€" who died Tuesday night at age 75. He was well respectâ€" ed by many of the criminal element he dealt with, he knew how to deal with them." During his years as a police officer, Heath was a member of the Criminal Intelligence Services of Ontario for "many, many, many years", said Waller. He also sat on the Southern Ontario Crime Conferences, a committee which met monthly in the Hamilton area to identify active criminals in the southern Ontario area. Heath joined the Oakville Police Department Aug. 8, 1945, following his return home. In 1951 he became a sergeant and often worked alone, someâ€" times without even a radio. He became a detective and eventually rose to the rank of superintendent upon his retirement in March 1979. A sergeant with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, Heath was captured at Dieppe in August 1942. He became a German PoW and was transferred from prison camp to prison camp. after severâ€" al escapes and recaptures, with his group which Waller said became known as "Heath‘s Henchman" in the PoW camps. He married his wife, Dais y, on Jan. 6th, 1940, in an informal ceremony at the manse of St. John‘s United Church in Oakville. Three months later, Heath went to war. He wasn‘t seen by his wife again for five years until June of 1945. Heath is also survived by five brothâ€" ers and sisters including retired Halton police Sgt. Hubert "Shot" Heath, Jean Waller, Mabel Manuel, Doug Heath, all of Oakville and Bill Heath of North Bay. He was predeceased by brothers Frank Heath and Harry Heath. "Eddie" Heath‘s funeral was 11 a.m. this morning at St. Aidan‘s Anglican Church, 318 Queen Mary Drive and was followed by cremation. and Wendy Bastead of Hillsburgh Heath was born in Oakville Nov. 13. 1918.
