Honest work. The partâ€"time position led to fullâ€"time work as the Town‘s "Operation‘s Technician". His job included a lot of nittyâ€"gritty stuff like street closures for construction or special events, maintaining concrete pads for newspaper boxes; as well as, the business of collecting recyclable material at curbside â€" a practice the town had initiated in 1983 (without boxes until 1988). "The more I get into this waste management business," he said in a recent interview from his Public Works Department office, "the more I realâ€" ize it is something we all need to do. From my perspective, I think we have a tremendous responâ€" sibility to the environment, as individuals, as well as a community." Back then he was fascinated by geology and hoped to find a place for himself in the oil patch upon graduation. Unfortunately, it was at a time when Canada‘s petroleum industry â€" both east and west â€" was shrinking, not growing. It‘s a new perspective for Jones. The environâ€" ment was not such an issue to him as a science student at Mount Allison University. (For the most part, the recycle program is administered and financed by the Region of Halton, though the boxes themselves are supplied by the Town). Other elements to his job include "home composting" and other programs to reduce solid waste. ark Jones readily admits that takâ€" ing care of garbage was not one of his primary career goals. In fact, it never even crossed his mind. But now that he‘s fully immersed in it (so to speak), the Town of Oakville‘s Solid Waste Manager (as of September 1992) says he finds the job challenging and rewarding. And guess what? We believe him. A family man, who lives in the College Park area with his wife and baby boy, Jones brings a healthy attitude and work ethic to his job. Essentially, he has responsibility for the dayâ€"toâ€" day operation of our sanitation fleet (10 trucks and 18 staff), in addition to monitoring the Blue Box program for Oakville. FINAL DAYS! This is the target set by the provincial fovemmem for municipalities to reach by the year 2000." He allowed himself a little smile. "As a comâ€" munity, we are doing very well." But hex:hn- sized, we can do better. It all hinges on ing our way back to a "conserver society" rather than the "consumer society" we have become. s ones is delighted, by the way, that Halton Region is including five new materials in the recycling program as of Feb. 1st. These include fine papers (junk mail), boxboard (cereal boxes), aluminum foil (pie plates), polystyrene (styrofoam packâ€" aging), and smallâ€"mouthed plastic bottles (made of HDPE, high density polyethylene). Jones is no raging radical. Downâ€"sizing is something that we need to do slowly, but surely over time, he said. Of course, the job entails lots of paper work, report writing, and attending seminars, to keep upâ€" toâ€"date on the most efficient waste management techniques. Also, he gets lots of feedback from people who travel and come back with revolutionary ideas on what we could be doing better. With it all, he fields a lot of questions from the local citizenry on where to get Blue Boxes:; how to get home composters; and why wasn‘t my garbage pickedâ€"up anyway? When he took over the newly created position of Solid Waste Manager last year, Jones continued to do the job of Operations Technician. It makes for a busy day. _FOCUS C Thurs., Feb. 4th & Friday Feb. 5th Featuring: y See Attitudes. . . page 1 ’A Oakville Place 842â€"4811 All Men‘s Fall & Winter Robes Selected Young Men‘s Fall & Winter Fashions Men‘s Fall & Winter Sportshirts and Long Sleeve Knits Men‘s Wool and Wool Acrylic Sweaters All Men‘s Seasonal Solid and Fancy Dress Shirts excluding solid white and denim AFE OAKV 50% OFF* KVILLE BEAVER | CLEARANCE k UX ds) /0 TO N /O STORE MANAGERS‘ and much more!
