According to installations offiâ€" cer/registrar Rod Demerling, the robbery of a lead cat from the curâ€" rent exhibition by artist Liz Magor is a reflection on both the host of the show and the town itself. "The loss of the piece has a negâ€" ative impact on the credibility of Oakville Galleries and the commuâ€" nity of Oakville as a whole," said Demerling. "Vandalism and losses of this nature make it more difficult for Oakville Galleries to secure the loan of valuable exhibition material from private lenders and other instiâ€" tutions, therefore decreasing the level of programming the galleries are able to offer. "Losses of this nature also disâ€" credit the professionalism of Oakville Galleries staff, whose level of professionalism is highly regardâ€" ed within the museum and visual arts communities across the counâ€" tty." The approximately fourâ€"inch high lead cat from Magor‘s 1982 piece "The Most She Weighed, The Least She Weighed" was taken from Centennial Gallery sometime between noon and 5 p.m. Jan. 23 or 1 to 5 p.m. Jan. 24. "The value of of the lost element is negligible but it‘s worth with regard to the integrity of the work as a whole is significant," said Demerling, explaining that Magor‘s work was on loan from the collecâ€" tion of the Canada Council Art Bank. "A reproduction of the lost piece could be made from one of the remaining ‘cats‘ but it could never truly replace the original eleâ€" ment." In response to the theft Oakville Galleries is making a public appeal for the return of the lost cat. An unmarked package containing the object may be dropped off at the Central Library or Centennial Gallery. Anyone with information regarding the matter may call Oakville Galleries at 844â€"4402, no questions asked.
