High school allâ€"stars ho'per'tol shine By TOM MICHIBATA Oakville Beaver staff Brian Whalen of Appleby College is the lone local player vying for a spot on the greater Metro Toronto squad that will play Buffalo in a high school hockey allâ€"star game. The game, known as Showcase ‘93, will be played March 17 at Varsity Arena (7:30 p.m.) as part of the Canadian university hockey championships in Toronto, Whalen is one of 13 Halton players who have already taken part in three practices at De La Salle Arena in Toronto since last Friday. The other 12 are: Chris McIsaac and Ryan Taylor (Assumption), Matt McLean (L.B. Pearson), Chris Davis, Chris Lappin, Tyler Grieve and Scott Pattinson (Nelson), John Sharland and Brian Fox (M.M. Robinson), Greg Dobbin (Georgetown) and Todd Fedyszyn (Aldershot). About 100 players from 10 associations from across Toronto and the surrounding area were invited. Grant, coach of the twoâ€"time Halton and Golden Horseshoe champion Nelson Flames, says the coaching staff is looking for "character players and grinding, hardâ€"nosed kidsâ€"â€"as well as speed, size and scoring punch. Morrison says the Showcase game is a means of getâ€" ting players better exposure to Canadian and American university scouts and show the high calibre of the high school game. Meanwhile, the Tim Horton‘s Challenge (formerly Halton Challenge) â€" the annual regional allâ€"star tournaâ€" mentâ€"â€"has been moved back to April 1â€"4 from its tradiâ€" tional February slot. Morrison, the Challenge‘s organizer, says this was to ensure a free time for all teams.
