"In a crisis situation, we often see kids turn into adults before our eyes. They understand what they are told and they want to know everything. We, always, tell people to be honest with their kids. Let them see, if they want to see. Kids are amazing. Even with the loss of a sibling or a parent, they digest it. They may cry, but if they can talk it out, they are able to accept things in their own way." Heaney likes to think her volunâ€" teers help people to be strong through their ordeals. ‘"We don‘t go in like gangbusters," she points out. "We are quiet in approach, but people don‘t usually know what to do next, so they ask." The process of going to the hospiâ€" tal for body identification is especialâ€" ly difficult for family members. Victim‘s Services can, also, help with funeral arrangements and notifyâ€" ing family and friends. Volunteers may follow a victim through the courts. Often it‘s just a matter of being there; an arm to hold onto; a sympaâ€" thetic ear. Heaney admits, "Because we are there for people at one of the most intimate moments of their lives, there is a bonding." Of course, these volunteer pay an emotional price â€"even though in their training â€" they are taught to "separate ers can pay an emotional themselves from the situation". It can‘t always be done. "You run into some pretty heartâ€" breaking situations" Heaney allows, "and there is nothing wrong with a few tears, as long as you don‘t lose control." The members of the Unit work in pairs, so there is someone to talk to afterwards. Declares the coordinator, "We never keep things in. We talk it out over coffee." The Unit has been on cases with CIB (Criminal Investigations Bureau), Major Crime, and even Intelligence, as well as, regular uniâ€" formed officers. It is sensitive work and Heaney admits to being protecâ€" tive of her "people". "Looking into their faces, you are just so glad you were there for them. You wish you could take their pain away." Sgt. Rod Wilson is the police manâ€" ager of the Victim‘s Services Unit. He calls it an extremely valuable service. "What it does is freeâ€"up the officers to do what they have to do." He has worked with Heaney on a number of occasions, he said. "Noreen has tremendous experience; she‘s good with people and reliable in a criâ€" sis," adding. "We really appreciate her." s The last week in January, Heaney and three of her supervisors, travelled down to Washington, D.C. for some advanced training in crisis manageâ€" ment.
