"Canadians know deep in their hearts that the only way this country will bounce back is when the Tories are out of government," said former regional councillor and school board trustee Bonnie Brown, to loud applause from the more than 200 peoâ€" : ple packed into the library‘s auditoriâ€" um. Local Liberals hoping to break the Tory hold on the riding got their first glimpse of the four candidates at a standingâ€"roomâ€"only auditorium at the local library. Bonnis Brown Bruce Hood â€" are fighting for the local nomination. And the wish to dump the governâ€" ment of the day continued to be the main thrust of the meeting. Sponsored by the Oakvilleâ€"Milton Federal Liberal Riding Association, the meetâ€"theâ€"candidates night, Wednesday, was the first time all four candidates have appeared in public together. Little, if any, sparring took place during the evening as each candidate responded in a minute or so to everyâ€" thing from the economy, capital punâ€" ishment, education, and the environment, to more philosophical issues about the essence of Liberalism. But it gave the party members and public a chance to listen for the first time about how candidates would tackâ€" le the problems of the day. One of the more puzzling stateâ€" ments came from chartered accountant, David Bazar, when asked why he wanted to become the Member of Parliament for this riding. "I don‘t realâ€" ly want to be an MP," commented Bazar, adding that it will mean spendâ€" ing time in Ottawa away from his famâ€" ily a good deal of the time. He said that the role of an MP could be effective, but that the real problem for MPs was that they were "getting beaten" by empireâ€"building bureaucrats. NEW , * 3 games for play Brown stood and said she did want to be the local MP and favored a strong central government with no more of the dissolution of the central governâ€" ment as under the Tories. "Canada is one of the most civilized countries in the world and it‘s coming apart under the Tories," she commentâ€" ed. There were only two occasions when the candidates â€" held under strict time constraints â€" got even close to a debate. Brown responded to one of Bazar‘s statements about the bureaucrats, sayâ€" ing she preferred to call them the pubâ€" lic service. In answer to a question about the Young Offender‘s Act, she said, although it could perhaps use some amendments, she didn‘t wish to be caught in the "Tory trap" of blaming victims. Bazar later retorted that he didn‘t think the bureaucracy was as wonderâ€" ful as was claimed, calling it "bloated" and "selfâ€"serving". As to Brown‘s supâ€" port of the Young Offender‘s Act, he said he believed the Young Offender‘s Act should have major changes. For his part, Anand said it was simâ€" ply his wish to give back to the country he felt "deeply indebted to" after arrivâ€" ing here 26 years ago with broken English and $5 in his pocket. The educator spoke of the "Tory bungling" of the economy, calling the government "inept, insensitive, and inefficient‘‘. Hood stressed the need to strengthâ€" en the ties between business and govâ€" emment, and called for greater emphaâ€" sis on job creation, retraining, and eduâ€" cation. Riding association president, Audrey Cairns, said the large turnout was an indication of the high interest in this election and the need for change.
