Effervescent and fortyâ€"someâ€" thing, Hadland said her presentaâ€" tions are always upbeat and funny. But has she always found it so easy to talk about love, sex, and relationâ€" ships? A born again Christian and a "lay pastoral counsellor" with the Baptist Church, Hadland carries the banner for "chastity" into the schools and churches around the continent. She does it with some panache (we hear). In September of last year, she appeared on CTV‘s Dini Petty Show with a panel of teens. This week, she will be addressing the young folks at St. Simon‘s Church. The relative newcomer to Oakville sipped on a glass of fruit juice as she went on to say, "Kids don‘t need ‘sex‘ education as much as they need ‘relationship‘ educaâ€" tion... They need to know that there are responsibilities attached to sexuâ€" al activity... and no birth control method is foolproof." everly Hadland wants young people to understand the consequences of engagâ€" ing in sexual activity. Code: The book is written in a downâ€" toâ€"earth, anecdotal style and backed up by some interesting research. Much of the research, Hadland pointed out, was done by registered nurses, and the manuscript was checked for accuracy by both a medical doctor and a Roman Catholic priest. "Life experience... the school of hard knocks." She laughed. "I think I‘m an expert at not having sex." Last year, she wrote a little book called "Hang On To Your Hormones" subtitled "Straight Talk on Sex, Love and Dating". It sells for $5. Her qualifications for writâ€" ing such a tome? "Pragmatically speaking, there are two ways to solve these probâ€" lems â€"â€" increase protection during intercourse or reduce sexual activiâ€" ty," Hadland said. She maintains "chastity" is the best option. That‘s when she decided to become more strident and take her show on the road, pointing out that there were essentially two problems related to sexual activity... unwantâ€" ed pregnancies and sexually transâ€" mitted diseases. In 1984, she started a counselling service in Toronto for troubled teens. According to Hadland, most of the kids who came or called were suffering from pregnancy crisis, post abortion trauma, or sexual abuse. It was frustrating, the youth counsellor revealed, "Because all we were doing was treating the symptoms, when what we really needed to do was get to the root of the problem." Hadland said, "I can appreciate the struggles kids are going through. It wasn‘t easy when I was growing up, and it‘s a lot worse for them now." two abortions which came before her conversion to Christianity in 1981. (See ‘Author‘ page 12)
