Rubbing shoulders with stars nothing new to Kathryn Kates VÂ¥ athryn Kates (no relation to food critic Joanne) is a e 1 f â€" d esc rib e d "Renaissance woman". The Toronto Sun once referred to her as a ""Womanâ€"onâ€"theâ€"Move"; Global TV dubbed her "Esthetician to the Stars". Like <a â€"cat, she trusts her instincts. When one door closes, another one pops open. So even with little in the way of formal eduâ€" cation, Kathryn Kates has managed "I‘ve always been a fighter though," she explained matterâ€"ofâ€" factly, "and ambitious. And I‘ve always tried to have a positive outâ€" look." No doubt, this attitude has helped her to land on her feet, once or twice. "I do the slowest facial and the fastest wax in town," she quipped in a recent interview. Modesty is apparently not one of her virtues. Not to worry. She has rubbed shoulâ€" ders with such showâ€"biz legends as Chubby Checker, Rompin‘ Ronnie Hawkins, and Eddy Fisher (as in Liz Taylor‘s ex). She claims to have gotten Jeff Healey his "big break", introducing him to his current record company and physically pushing him on stage at his breakâ€" through concert. Certainly, she bounced around the music business, starting as an 18â€"yearâ€"old dancer with the Climax Jazz Band, and others, before gradâ€" uating to agent/publicist at the tenâ€" der age of 21 and heading off to the bright lights of Nashville and Los Angeles. All this before settling into her true calling as an esthetician (beauty specialist), freelance jourâ€" nalist and editor, and "cocooning" on the 15th floor of her Oakville condominium. But the spirited Ms. Kates seems to have few fond memories of her experiences in public relations and promotions. Because she was young and female, she suggests, she selâ€" dom got credit for her work in a business dominated by the "old boy‘s network". Admittedly, a good facial may make you feel pampered, she continued, but the main thing is ‘"it cleans the skin, plumps it up, and makes it look healthy." Since becoming editor of "Esthetics, the magazine", Kates has vowed to tackle in print such delicate issues as, "Can the beauty industry and feminism coâ€"exist?" and "What to consider before going under the knife?" Kathryn was born in Toronto and raised there with her younger sister Valerie who is now a "humoroloâ€" gist" (living in Mexico and ostensiâ€" bly working on a PhD). Kathryn who says she loves her sister dearly, also says, "Val is the only person I to launch herself into a new career in freelance journalism, writing for the fashion pages of the Toronto Star and editing and writing for a trade magazine called, Esthetics, the magazine". This week, she will be in New York City for the Star interviewing hairstylist Vidal Sassoon as he celeâ€" brates his 50th anniversary in the business. Kates is ecstatic about the assignment. "Sassoon is sort of an institution, an idol to me," Kates said. Meeting the hair guru will make a great story â€" not only for the newspaper â€" but for her regular clientele in her salon. For though she enjoys the writing and the travelling, Kates maintained her first priority these days was her studio, "Kathryn Kates Beauty Experience". Furthermore, the esthetician said, "I really believe you can look good, and look your age, and not spend a fortune." Her philosophy is simple: "Make people feel the best they can feel, so they shine inside and out." For the most part, she added, it is really a question of good hygiene. Esthetician and writer, woman has had a very interesting life But no illusions, she asserted, adding dryly, "I am not a big fan of plastic surgery." It seems a plastic surgeon, while tightening the ligaâ€" ments in her jaws about a year ago, left a small section of her face paralysed. know who takes time off from her holidays to put in a little work. According to Kathryn, this made for eclectic family vacaâ€" tions in the big city one summer and out on the prairie the next. She left high school in Grade 13 to seek her fortune, dancing in her own inimitable fashion. Audiences loved it. she said, adding it was DON‘T PAY A CENT!
