There we met students from the International School. I met a girl from Toronto who has spent the last ten years living in Curacao. The people are very friendly here. I was sitting outside the supermarket with another girl waiting for the rest of our group. We were eating our lunch when a man from the store brought us some boxes to use as a table and chairs. It turned out that his son went to the University of Toronto. After an enjoyable day of shopping, we set out for San Blas. Until next week, Dear Oakville: We arrived just after lunch in Curacao, a Caribbean island in the Netherland Antilles. The afternoon program began with a flag exchange between our Captain and the Commissioner. Then we were introduced to the Commissioner, the Canadian Consul, the Director for the Department of Youth Affairs and the Director of the Department of Culture. Then we were taken by bus to a formal reception at the Department of Youth Affairs. They explained to us what they do and told us about the history of Curacao. For example, "How do you do?" is "Kon ta bai?" in Papiamentu. Then they served us a dinner of local dishes. The cuisine here is made up mostly of seafood, goat and iguana meat! The next morning we were visited on the boat by a lecturer to talk about Carib art. This art lecturer, a Miss Eckmeyen, is putting together a collection of artwork from all of the Caribbean islands. She told us about it and then showed us some slides of art from Curacao. Some of the pieces were very interesting. spontaneous were they.
