Air pollution affecting quality of life When it comes to air pollution, people in Oakville believe the quality of life is as important as any longâ€"term health effects. "The longevity of life may have improved, but the quality of life hasn‘t. What we want is not just a lower incidence of long term health problems, but a good quality of life," said Dr. Jack Richman, a resident of Oakville whose field is in occupationâ€" al medicine. He said that more than just long term health effects should be investigated. We have to look at the quality of life; not just toxicity and health," he added. The panel for the forum consisted of representatives from industries including Ontario Hydro, Ford of Canada, St. Lawrence Cement and Petroâ€"Canada as well as the health department, Mayor Ann Mulvale, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, and Oakville resident and teacher Tom Beer. To Dr. John Sandford, a local ear, nose and throat specialist, air pollution in this area should be of concermn. He noted that many patients with problems â€" one woman with bronchial asthma â€" recover when they are far away from Oakville "This is tragic and embarrassing, he said. He said the presentations from industry and government were good, but it‘s "not good enough." NONâ€"PROFIT GROUPS Don Ogner, of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, noted that ozone continues to be the "bad actor" in terms of human health. He added that Totally Reduced Sulphurs (TRS) emitted from Petroâ€"Canada refinery in Bronte has decreased in recent years. "It is coming down, there has been some improvement at the refinery," he said, saying many call TRS a "nuiâ€" sance" pollutant. "I don‘t share that view. If you feel nauseous, then it‘s not just a nuisance." He cited figures pointing to the reduction in number of hours of poor air quality from Petroâ€"Canada. David Stronach, Environmental Health supervisor with the regional health department said air quality standards to reduce risk to serious health problems are being met in Oakville. "In fact, Oakville air quality is rated from pristine to good on all but a few hours a year," he said, adding that although residents may not suffer any long term effects, that low level polluâ€" tion and odors can affect quality of life. Residents concerned over the fact that the Ford spokesman said nothing about the plant‘s emissions, were told that a future forum would deal with that issue *4 nf 6013 \Â¥4 J6 ® 5334 5012 5018 5184 5265 5500 5270 SHOPPING MALLS Trafalgar Village........ "In fact, we finally had to cut it off because it was getting beyond us," said Mylet, a District Governor of Rotary International. His district conâ€" tains 45 clubs, including Oakville‘s, and was one of three districts â€" 130 clubs in all â€" involved in the clothing collection. The Oakville resident wants to see at least some of the Rotary shipâ€" ment arriving at the refugee camps and so he‘ll be leaving on Feb. 28th for a 10â€"day visit to Croatia. f Mylet highly praised two major transport industries. Canadian Airlines has already flown 10 tons of "high quality" clothing Rotarians have donated to Graz, Austria, free of charge. From there, Graz‘s Rotarians took it across the border to the camps. Tippetâ€"Richardson Limited in Toronto has also played a major role by transporting more of the collected clothing from depots in the three Rotarian districts (which takes in a large part of Ontario) to Howell Packaging in Toronto. Besides supervising 150 Rotarian volunteers in bundling up the donations, the company arranged for shipment to Graz, said Mylet. . So far, eleven 40â€"foot containers each "the size of a long trailer truck" have been loaded on ships with another 16 containers destined for the sea voyage. Mylet said he will see some of this cargo arrive in the camps where refugees, many of them escapees of the warâ€"torn city of Sarajevo in Bosnia, are shivering in the cold of a long winter. "It‘s part of Rotary‘s Health, Hunger and Humanity program," he explained. "Because Rotary is nonâ€"sectarian and nonâ€"political, we don‘t question the politics and religion of the people we‘re giving it to â€" whether they‘re Muslims or not. They‘re all just people who are cold and hungry." Rotary International recently donated $130,000 to help feed the refugees, he added.
