Describing himself as a loyal Mulroney supporter, Jelinek said the Prime Minister‘s resignation left him feeling a "void in the pit of my stomach." "Today is far too early. All the options are open from one end of the spectrum to the other, from runâ€" ning for nomination in the riding at one end, to the other of running for the leadership," said Jelinek. "I‘m not surprised, but it sadâ€" dens me. I feel happiness for him (Mulroney) and his family," said Jelinek. "The inhumane abuse he and his family suffered for trying to do the right things for the country. I‘m sad for the party and the counâ€" try, but the party and the country will persevere." As far as his own political future, Jelinek was evasive. "I have to consider the full specâ€" trum of my political situation and I‘ll have to sit back and discuss the matter with my family and my colâ€" leagues and my association memâ€" bers," he said. Last April, Jelinek announced his intention to run for reâ€"election in the next federal election at the annual general meeting of the Oakvilleâ€" Milton Federal Progressive Conservative Riding Association. At that time Jelinek said he was "ready to fight the good fight." However, at that time, prior to the crushing defeat of the Charlottetown Accord referendum last autumn, Jelinek was predicting another majority Tory victory under Mulroney‘s leadership.
