When you reach retirement, you will have two nest eggs. If that is the case, you will enjoy a higher standard of living and you will deserve it. Peter Watson, MBA, CFP, RFP is the president of Peter Watson Investments Limited â€" an Oakville firm specializing in retirement planning, RRSPs, and investment planning. He can be reached at 842â€"7602. 4 Regular savings plan augments RRSP strategy That‘s not a problem. Just save at the beginning of the month. In financial terms, this is referred to as "pay yourself first". This has a way of putting your savings plan on automatic. Once you have done this for a few months, you will become used to your reduced disposable income. The advantage will be significant. You will have both a Registered Retirement Savings Plan and a nonâ€"registered retirement savings plan. If you wait until the end of each month and save what you have left, you will probably not save anything. By the end of the month, you are always out of money. What happens if you want a higher standard of living during retirement? Maybe you would like to retire at a younger age. It is not Ottawa‘s decision what amount you should save. That decision still belongs to us and we, as individuals, should make that decision. Everyone with a regular income should have a regular monthly savings program. I know this sounds so simple, but it really works. Don‘t worry about where the savings will come from â€" just do it. The government‘s objective with the RRSP option is to encourage each and every one of us to save for retirement. They determine how much we can save from year to year. To motivate us to contribute, they allow a tax deduction for any contribution. Regardless of the tax deduction, the true advantage is that we all have the potential to develop sizable retirement funds. In many cases, the significant part of an investment portfolio is in a RRSP. It is, almost, as if we feel there is a rule not to save more than the government suggests. Put more simply... most people should augment their RRSP savings with a regular, nonâ€"RRSP savings plan. The RRSP season has officially ended. March 1st was the last day to contribute to a 1992 Registered Retirement Savings Plan. Now it is time to invest in a nonâ€" registered retirement savings program. And the advantage of this type of plan is that there is no maximum contribution limit. â€" It‘s no longer enough to simply do business. You have to do business with the environment in mind. That was the underlying message Carmine Falcone brought to his audience at the Mayor‘s Business Breakfast at LeDome Banquet Hall Tuesday morning. The message centred around "sustainable development" which the president of Shell Canada Products Limited described as an environmental concept applied to business that would allow future generations to say: "It‘s still here and it‘s still ours." Businesses ignore the environment at their own perilâ€"Shell pres. "We are now looking at the forest instead of the trees," he said. At Shell, sustainable development has changed the way the company does business in several ways, he noted. For instance, the company now adopts a life cycle approach for determining what effects its chemical products â€" from the research stage to final Shell learned this a few years ago when it realized â€"as most companies did â€" the economic, political and social importance of adopting sustainable development policies. "Unless business people are committed to sustainable development, they will lose their customers, their investments and their reputations," he stated. "Investors would just go somewhere else." today than merely worrying about "the bottom line" of profit, noted Falcone. They must take into account the effect on the environment of everything they do. If they don‘t make their own sustainable developmental decisions, someone else will do it for them, "whether they like it or not," he HOROSCOPES If today is your birthday LIBRARIES Oakville Public Library.
