School board wants action against killer trading cards By ANGELA BLACKBURN Oakville Beaver Staff So far Halton public school officials say no killer trading cards have been confiscated in Halton‘s public schools. Halton Board of Education director Bob Williams said he believes the cards are available in Halton, but hasn‘t heard about any principal having confiscated any â€" a rigfit the principals do have under order from Williams. At the same time, Ward 1 trustee Lynn Clarke threw her supâ€" port behind a provincial effort to cet touch with the cards. At its Jan. 30th board of direcâ€" tors meeting, the Ontario Public School Boards Association â€" on which Clarke was a voting memâ€" ber â€" passed a resolution requestâ€" ing the federal government to undertake the appropriate steps to institute federal controls leading to blocking the entry of "Killer Cards" at all custom depots across Canada. Oakvilleâ€"Milton MP. Otto Jelinek, the federal Minister of Revenue, said his government is working to change the Criminal Code in recards to the cards. Jelinek told the Beaver recently that the necessary Criminal Code changes are being argued with the Charter of Richts and Freedoms. "Killer cards and killer board games are sick. There‘s no place in our society for them," said Jelinek, adding no killer board games have come into the country unless smugâ€" cled in. The Criminal Code‘s obscenity provisions allows customs officials to seize some of the trading cards and called them "absolute crap." Jelinek said he will find a way of dealing with the issue and pointed to the possibility of his acting unilaterally to give orders to stop ‘all the cards and allowing individuals to take him to court over it. Jelinek said he first proposed change over six months ago with over 145,000 signatures on a petiâ€" tion supporting the effort along with Deborah Mahaffy, mother of murdered Burlington teen Leslie Mahaffy. As the mother of three children, Clarke said that was her personal interest. * Turn existing space to living space inexpensively. * Finish your basement tastefully and also add value to your home. 15 Years Experience CALL DAN 338â€"5857 ums * Kitchens "Our schools have zero tolerâ€" ance for these tasteless cards. Principals have been asked to conâ€" fiscate the cards if they see them in schools and to inform parents of the response. To do any less would be tantamount to condoning their very existence," said Williams. A cry of disapproval for the cards â€" trading cards which feature serial killers, their victims and their crimes â€" again went up from the OPSBA meeting. "Killer cards are a concern to all parents and responsible members of our community," said Clarke. "Victims‘ families and friends suffer sufficient pain and loss withâ€" out the aggrandizement and profit by unprincipled individuals and companies," said Clarke. In a letter to the Beaver Clarke said as a trustee and parent she supported the resolution to "preâ€" vent popularization of human pain and suffering."
