It‘s Oakville. However last Sunday morning, Oakville resident Jim Mambella felt like he was on the big screen in a typical "crime" scene when he stumbled upon two car thieves in his Speers Road apartment‘s underground parking lot. Mambella attempted to apprehend the pair, but wound up being slashed by one of the fleeing burglars. Luckily, only his jacket was cut â€" not his arm, but the experience left him reeling and wanting to make his neighbors aware. "People are unaware of how close it is to home, it‘s in your own backyard. It‘s scary," he said. "I was just doing what I thought as a human, you were supposed to ®.71 Around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday Mambella, a 31â€"yearâ€" old millwright employed by Dofasco, who‘s also been functioning as a relief (weekend) superintendent at his apartment building, was in the underground parking lot doing a check of the garbage facilities. As he strolled to the end of a corridor, he caught sight of his next door neighbor getting into her car. The two waved and she drove away via an exit ramp. At the same time, Mambella heard "mumbling" from a rear corner of the garage. He glanced over and caught sight of two men ducking by a car parked near the rear wall. _ Cellular phone inâ€"hand, Mambella dialed 911 and gave his address. One of the men rushed at him, "clipped" him, wrecking the telephone and darted up the same ramp on which the car had just left. TB Despite the recent winter weather, spring is really coming. Proof of this is the start of the annual maple syrup exhibits at the Mountsberg Wildlife Centre and the Crawford Lake Conservation Area in north Halton. Dimly lit, with one bulb burned out on the » second landing, Mambella continued after the suspect. 3P * Mambella reached through the railing in an attempt to trip the fleeing man, but his prey turned, swore at the relief superintendent and then struck out at him. Mambella put his arm up to shield himself. When he. lowered his arm he discovered gashes in the sleeve of his jacket, halted his pursuit. The suspect fled upwards and out a rear door to the outside. Mambella returned to his apartment and called police who quickly responded. Mambella, who moved to Oakville from St. Catharines last September, said the full realization of what could have happened bowled him over in the wake of the incident. So too did "off the record" reports he said neighbors made to him of other incidents that have happened â€" at the same time Mambella said he was being advised to leave the issue alone. Mambella pointed out the danger the two suspects, one apparently armed with a knife, could have posed to his female neighbor had she been alone in the underâ€" ground garage. "I‘m shocked that this happens on a daily basis and our society permits it. Nothing is being done. I feel sorry for the police, what can they do unless the public helps them," said Mambella. k 1 CLASSICS HAND SEWN LOAFERS WEDNESDAY. The budget, presented at Monday‘s finance committee meeting represents a 2% increase that will translate into a 4.01% millrate increase on the tax bill. It was reached after trustees directed staff to cut a further $2.4 million from the previously proâ€" posed budget. Those cuts saw another $1.4 million hacked out across the sysâ€" tem and assumes a further $1 milâ€" lion will be raised if 4,000 board employees agree to voluntarily An information meeting sponsored by parents concerned about the possible loss of paediatric services at Oakvilleâ€"Trafalgar Memorial Hospital has been set for tonight (Wed.
