Mat is being tightâ€"lipped about an inciâ€" dent involving Peel regional police which occurred at the St. Lawrence Cement plant in Clarkson last Thursday (March 4th). John Budz, the MOE‘s Halton and Peel district manager, would only confirm that police were called to the plant by the MOE, but he would not elaborate on why. "In the end it didn‘t matter (that the police were called). There was a misunderstanding between the variâ€" ous parties on a technical issue that had to be resolved. The ministry is satisfied that it was resolved to our satisfaction." Budz said. Budz said the "misunderstandâ€" ing" between the two parties occurred over the MOE‘s request to collect cement and dust samples from the plant for testing. The samâ€" ples will be tested for traces of toxic substances, he said. However, once at the plant, police were told to leave after the "misunâ€" derstanding" between the MOE and St. Lawrence Cement was quickly resolved. "After some time the confusion got sorted, (the police) left and we completed our dealings," he said. ‘"We‘ve (called the police) before. It is a provision that is available to us. It has been used â€" not that often â€" but we have had to rely on it in the past," Budz said. A company spokesperson said the incident should never have hapâ€" pened. Menet said he was at a loss to explain why the MOE saw fit to call in the police. "I don‘t know what their rationale was. St. Lawrence Cement never refused to give them the (cement and dust) samples," he said. However, Menet said the compaâ€" ny questions the validity of the samâ€" ples, since they were taken during the plant‘s twoâ€"month shutdown. The plant is scheduled to resume cement production March 31 st. "The MOE has taken some samâ€" ples which we strongly feel aren‘t taken properly," Menet said. The meeting will be the last chance for local Liberals and interested members of the public to meet and hear the views of the four Liberal nominees. The four candidates include: Mohan Annand, David Bazar,Bonnie Brown and Bruce Hood. The Oakvilleâ€"Milton Federal Liberal Riding Association is holding a Candidates Night at the Bayrischerâ€"Hof Banquet Hall in Milton on March 22nd at 7 p.m. The candidates will square off at the riding‘s nomination conâ€" vention on April 7th at the St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre in Oakville. The winning candidate will represent the riding associaâ€" tion in the upcoming federal elecâ€" tion. The tests involved sample: 15 U.S. cement kilns, eight of burn hazardous waste. Budz acknowledged the newspaâ€" per article had something to do with the timing of the tests. However, he said the samples were taken because "of the ongoing concerns with the burning of (waste) solvents at the plant over the last couple of years." St. Lawrence Cement has been burning waste solvents during the production of lowâ€"alkali cement since 1975. About 3.5 million litres a year of highly chlorinated waste solâ€" vents are currently being burned at the plant. However, St. Lawrence Cement has never been required to test for toxic residues, a policy the MOE hopes to change with new operating rules it is negotiating with the comâ€" pany. Budz said wants the company to install continuous monitors to meaâ€" sure how efficiently its kiln burns and just what comes out of its stack. The MOE is currently in the proâ€" cess of amending the company‘s cerâ€" tificate of operation, which was issued in 1975. Budz said data colâ€" lected last Thursday will help the MOE determine if St. Lawrence Cement is in compliance with provincial airâ€"emission standards.
