Ian Oliver Publisher Robert Glasbey Advertising Director Norman Alexander Editor Geoff Hill Circulation Director Teri Casas Office Manager Tim Coles Production Manager While these incidents are disturbing, they should not beâ€"unexpected in 1993 when younger and younger children are being deâ€"sensitized to humanity of all kinds. Whether it‘s a small thing and a seemingly forgotâ€" ten concept of good manners, to being considerate of others, as a society, we are rapidly becoming morally bankrupt. And folks, it‘s not getting any better. We have become a society of television watchers and no matter what masquerades as television programming, we watch it, our kids watch it and increasingly, what all of us are watching is trash...dangerous trash. This comes just weeks after the network conceded that it had faked a consumers‘ report on explosion factor of a pickâ€"up truck produced by General Motors. The film showed a truck exploding on impact, the theory being that the gas tank was not situated behind the frame, which made it vulnerable to explosion. They aired this bit of trash and after GM did some investigation, they had to go on air and recant the entire piece, admitting that they staged the test and the explosion and resulting fire was the result of using a kind of flare gun attached to the front of the vehicle that hit the truck. These are the kinds of people we‘re to trust t in airing credible, caring and intelligent programming. he accosting of a 10 yearâ€"old girl by a group of five boys, one of whom brandished a knife, should be of great concern to all of us. The 12 yearâ€"old boy who apparently wielded the weapon has been charged by Halton Regional Police and four other boys involved in the cowardly act, were released into the custody of their parents. Earlier this week too, we had the attack of a teenager by some skinâ€" heads and another attack on a teenager for no apparent reason. Incredibly, NBC has already started the ball rolling to produce a televiâ€" sion movie about the current standoff in Waco Texas. They want to be the first network to air a feature, no doubt that will happen as soon as the twisted religious zealots are either killed or starve to death. Television used to be an escape medium, that was its appeal. There was entertainment, drama, comedy and other programs that didn‘t dwell in gore, torture and more. Now, more and more programs deal in some kind of twisted programming that deals with ‘real life‘ incidents and the more gruesome the better. We‘re not television Luddites but parents have to be more vigilant than ever over what their children watch and with the coming of new technoloâ€" gy, there will be hundreds of channels from which to choose, making the task even more difficult. Should public school teachers be asked to donate a day‘s pay in order to reduce the Halton Board of Education‘s 1993 budget? There are some good programs on the air but for every one that is acceptable, there are scores that try to sensationalize and reflect positiveâ€" ly on crime and criminals. you show people this kind of stuff long enough, too many of us will regard it as the way society works. We‘re now watching the hypocrisy of the U.S. legal system where a black man was beaten by a group of police officers. The event was capâ€" tured on tape and there‘s no defense for the act...period. Yet the defense is claiming the officers were provoked. Bizarre. The robbing of one girl at knifepoint by a group of boys is only the lat est example of a society apparently bent on selfâ€"destruction. Selfâ€"destructing 467 Speers Road, Oakville, Ont. The plea I had just watched was about the thousands of animals that the ‘Humane Society‘ must put to sleep every year because they have no alternative â€"â€" they canâ€" not afford to look after them. One girl declared that 47,000 animals were put to sleep in Montreal alone last Government condemned for abortion stance year, while another girl was carrying a cat into another room to join those that were given the lethal needle. I, too, felt sad at the sight, not only for those workers who have the task of doing such a vile thing, but most of all for the animals... the real losers. Then I thought of the other plea; the one that is ignored by so many â€" the plea for the unborn child. The slaughter and death of the unborn is the most violent of all, yet how many of us give a second thought to the pain and screams that must go on inside the womb that we turn into a tomb? And of course, we have the second victims of this barbaric crusade... the mothers. We have doctors who perform abortions to make a today‘s standards, are not considered It has happened in the past. What is our gain as a society in this senseless slaughâ€" ter? No wonder our O.H.LP. is lacking money to assist those who are in real need of medical care, considering all the expenses involved in abortion. And this is my comparison. Adriana Bassi Kim Campbelll insensitive to needs of Canadians Dear Sir: i thought Kim Campbell to be a great prospect for prime minister until I watched the David Millgaard Story. The story showed actual filming of Mrs. Millgaard approaching Kim Campbell and the reply made by Kim Campbell when she was minister of Justice to Mrs. Millgaard: "If you want me to look at your son‘s file then do not approach me personalâ€" ly." This spontancous reply proved to me that Kim Campbell is insensitive to peoples‘ feelings and â€" needs. The reply also sounded like a threat. I am the mother of a 22 year old and a 16 year old and I‘ve always been a Conservative, only once did I vote Liberal and that was for Trudeau the first time he was elected. It doesn‘t seem to bother their conscience; they have none. And we have in power a government who seems to be set on getting rid of the unborn without a What I find most appalling is the excessive emphasis that the exâ€"Minister of Health, Frances Lankin, has placed on the abortion issue. Being a woman and mothâ€" er herself, she should understand the problem from a woman‘s point of view. She should be seeking a differâ€" ent solution for unwanted children â€"â€" other than abortion â€" which destroys the dignity of women as bearers of This government also recruits doctors to perform these abortions.
