(Continued from page 1) Stronyg‘s announcement is good news for both ~Oakville Hydro and local consumers, Brewer said. ‘Carr said in 1984, Ontario had the lowest hydro rates among 14 autoâ€"proâ€" ducing regions in North America. There are currently 10 autoâ€"producing regions with lower hydro rates than Ontario‘s, including Tennessee and Detroit. "(Ontario Hydro‘s) plan is a good first start, but it still might not be enough," Carr said. The opposition wants Ontario Hydro‘s costâ€"cutting plan tabled before a legislative comâ€" mittee so the public can be assured it is a workable plan. "We want to see exactly where the cuts are going to be made, to make sure the right ratio of staff and manâ€" agement cuts exist. A leaner (Ontario) hydro will be no more. efficient if it remains as topâ€"heavy as it is today," Carr said. "We _ really needed it. I can‘t live with 8% or 9% (Ontario Hydro) increases year after year as a consumers and as chairman of Oakville Hydro," he said. T JACK BREWER Brewer said Oakville Hydro is no stranger to Ontario Hydro‘s costâ€"cutâ€" ting approach. The local utility has been working on cutting its costs to hold the line on rate increases for the last two years. f Oakville South MPP_ and Progressive Conservative Party indusâ€" try critic Gary Carr, said high energy costs are driving businesses out of Ontario and applauded the plan. Brewer said, however, there may be one downside with Ontario Hydro‘s costâ€"cutting measures. "Our costs are down and we don‘t have any debt," said Brewer. "We‘re cutting to the bone, promoting producâ€" tion and our employees are respondâ€" "I feel sorry for the people losing their jobs. But there will be more jobs lost if industries can‘t be competitive. It comes a little too late, it should have happened last year," said Carr. "There are concerns it doesn‘t make us vulnerable for future supply," he said. Hydro chairman welcomes moves
