There are no secrets and no shortcuts, according to the owner of Swiss Interiors which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Muller vividly remembers the 70 and 80â€" hour weeks which were commonplace in the early days of the business. There were times when he even went out on deliveries if the boys were shorthanded. "It‘s all part of giving good customer service, "he says. "You do whatever you have to do to keep the customer happy." When Muller reflects on his 40 years in the furniture business, he believes that it has been his devotion to customer service which has kept the store going through the good times and bad. In fact, customers have come to rely on him to the point that some have even come to him after they‘ve purchased furniture from another store and asked him if he can fix up the mistakes. Swiss Interiors celebrates 40 years of helping furnish Oakville homes Marianne Strutt noted that white, blush and bone have been the preferred Sam and Carol Muller of Swiss Interiors: celebrating four decades of service to Oakville. Muller came to Canada from his native Switzerland in 1951, and opened his first busiâ€" ness with his wife Bettyâ€"a small upholstery shopâ€"on Dean Avenue in 1953. From there, the business moved to a larger location on Church St.. When that property was expropriated in the midâ€"60‘s, Muller moved to the present location on Lakeshore Road. work key to longevity for Sam Muller‘s landmark store Over the years the shop has gone through some transitions, moving from a focus on Scandinavian furniture to predominantly tradiâ€" tional styles. The one thing that has remained the same, according to Muller, is a policy of customer service and competitive prices. This has become especially important in the last three years, according to Muller, because the recession has demanded a lean operation and low pricing. "Those colors are safe because you can change your wallpaper and towâ€" els to get a different look (without investing in new tubs, sinks and toilets)," she said. "I think people got tired of their lavender, yellow or green bathâ€" rooms." What happens to the old bathroom fixtures they remove? They‘re dumped. f K "Although we‘ve had people asking for a tub or basin in a color they can‘t buy anymore, we just couldn‘t store them here," said Marianne, adding: "You wouldn‘t get much for them anyway." 6 KE LA H O ERS$ U TL MARCH 31/9 - store, Swiss Interiors may look like a small operation. In fact, the store encompasses over 9,000 square feet of showroom spread out over four floors. Muller carries furniture in the mid to highâ€"end range from a variety of manufacâ€" turers, but his bestâ€"selling lines are still Canadian. Whether you‘re in the market for a bedroom suite or diningroom suite, Muller says it is hard to beat the quality of Canadian "case goods" (nonâ€"upholstered furniture). "The American styles may be fancier," he conâ€" cedes, "but the Canadian goods are better finâ€" ished." After forty years, Muller admits that he no longer puts in the gruelling 80â€"hour weeks, and he is happy to hand over the management of the business to his daughter Carol who has been working with him since finishing univerâ€" sity about five years ago. Asked if any changes are planned, Muller replies that it will be business and usual, with customer service at the top of the list. Swiss Interiors also carries a large selection of prints and accessories, and large line of Stiffel lamps.
