_ PORTFOLLIO By HOWARD MOZEL Oakville Beaver Staff While the exterior of Arts on King may lean toward the timeworn, the Toronto gallery‘s interior embraces a crossâ€"section of the best contemporary furniture. The occasion is "Arrivals and Departures," an exhibition of graduate work from the Furniture Program of Sheridan College. The show â€" which continues through April 8 â€" is the culmination of years of exploration and design discoveries by students who are in their third and final year at Sheridan. The genesis of the show makes for a story all its own. According to Scottâ€" Taggart, the exhibit traces its beginnings to the students‘ Exhibition Planning class as a theoretical exercise. As the work continued, it dawned on everyone involved that the realization of an actual exhibition was only limited by their effort. The exhibition features 19 pieces by six talented craftsmen: Greg Brook, Alison Fox, Keith Haill, Robert Jason Kopp, Clare Scottâ€"Taggart and Betty Woo. According to Scottâ€"Taggart, who helped organize the exhibition, this is one retroâ€" spective that will accommodate all tastes. "It‘s definitely not boring," she says. "It‘s so diverse everyone will love it." This should come as no surprise to anyone with even a casual understanding of Sheridan‘s School of Crafts and Design. Since its inception 25 years ago, it is widely recognized as having produced some of Canada‘s finest designer/makers. We thought it was important for us to put on a show and important to hold it in Toronto," said Scottâ€"Taggart. The students approached three galleries and their idea was accepted by two. They decided to go with Arts on King, an old Ford plant at King and Jarvis Streets with rough, oily floors and crumbling red brick walls. This environment creates an interesting atmosphere for the furniture but in no way detracts from the pieces. The owners of the gallery â€" who also own several restaurants â€" believed the show was a sound idea too and decided to celebrate last week‘s Grand Opening of Arts on King with Arrivals and Departures. "Arrivals and Departures" Scottâ€"Taggart explained that the exhibition encompasses two categories of work. The first is "productionâ€"oriented," or prototypes for industrial design. The second is what she characterized as "art furniture." Included are desks, clocks, stereo stands and everything from a small table light to a queen size bed. Arts on King is located at 169 King St. East. Its hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday then 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the remainder of the week. You £3 ROYAL BANK Sweet dreams: "Armabeddon" by Alison Fox.
