Funding shortfall for roads has town scrambling The Town of Oakville will have to do a little number juggling to make up for a 2% shortfall in Ministry of Transportation funding, said Michelle Seguin, the town‘s treasurer and finance director. The town will receive a basic road subsidy allocation of $3.24 million this year, $161,000 less than expectâ€" ed, Seguin said. "We‘ll have to make an adjustâ€" ment and reâ€"finance (the shortfall) from other areas," she said. By SAL BOMMARITO Oakville Beaver Staff while the remainder will go towards capital projects. The largest portion of the operating subsidy will go towards transit expenditures, she said. While the town will get 2% less, Halton Region as a whole will get 13.3% more, said ministry spokeswomen Dianne Delaney. Delaney said Halton will get a total of $4.78 million in 1993. In all, the ministry is handing out $741 milâ€" lion in road subsidies to municipaliâ€" ties throughout the province, she said. She said the allocations to individâ€" ual municipalities will vary from year to year depending on the needs of that particular municipality. Municipalities also have the option of applying for supplementary subsidy allocations over and above the basic subsidy provided by the ministry, Delaney said. However,. Delaney said the total amount the ministry will pay out in 1993 is down 1.6% over last year. "We‘re looking to receive $2.5 million (in supplementary subsidies from the province). Most of that‘s for the (Upper Middle Road) bridge," Seguin said. Of that total, $2.1 million has been earmarked for the bridge, $300,000 for Cornwall Road and $45,000 for traffic lights. Seguin said the town has also applied for an additional $700,000 in subsidies "over and above" the other subsidy allocations. The town expects to receive "conâ€" necting link" funding from the province totalling $450,000, to be used for reconstruction of Lakeshore Road West from Maurice Drive to Margaret Drive. The ministry has also provided $71,000 for the Lakeshore Road proâ€" ject through its basic subsidy allocaâ€" tion to the town. Connecting links are sections of provincial highway which pass through towns or cities.
