"For instance, women need extra iron during menstruation, pregnancy and childbirth, and can be at increased risk of develop- ing iron deficiency. But when women diet, they may not be getting enough iron and other nutrients because of their reduced calorie intake." The Canadian Dietetic Association has a spe- cial toll-free line, available to March 3lst, at 1- 800-563-4444 to answer questions about nutrition. This service is available in both English and French. "lt's a way of getting more fibre and less fat into the diet which is one of the goals of healthy eating," said MacKay. "About 40% of the Canadian diet is made up of fat. It should be about 30%." Women need fat for hormonal regulation (men- struation, breast feeding and so on), she said. Fat also helps carry vitamins throughout the body. The food guide also recommends achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight by enjoy- ing regular physical activity and healthy eating, limiting salt, alcohol and caffeine and eating a variety of foods. For more information, call the region's Nutrition Services department at 825-6116. Most of the callers looking for information from the nutrition department are women, she added. And indeed, this is the segment of the region the department is aiming at during March, Nutrition Month, partly because women do most of the food shopping for their families and are the ones intent on buying healthy foods, she said. Many of the women are already armed with the new Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating. Since it became available just before Christmas, the nutrition department had 13,0000 requests for it. However, the latest guide has undergone a dras- tic change in that it recommends nearly double the grain, fruits and vegetables as the previous one. "Such people want to know about nutrition and how to maximize their health and well-being by eating better nutritionally," said Jessica MacKay. here are many areas in which Halton appears exceptional, but you wouldn't really expect it to be more interested in nutrition than many other municipalities in the province. Apparently it is, though, according to the region's nutrition educator who attributes this to a well-read and better-educated populace.
