The committee also recommend- ed abandoning the suggestion that the level crossing of Maple Grove Drive over the CNR tracks be re- opened to accommodate Garfield trucks. The committee found the sug- gestion to be impractical. If, after a reasonable period, Garfield has not abated noise from its operations and has not stopped foul- ing town toads, the committee rec- ommended the town prosecute the IEH'S'te SUNDAY iiiii'il DINNER :/ Natural gas is cleaner burning than wood, so it's kinder to the environment. "Although it's early, 1993 looks good," No. 2 District Commander superin- tendent Richard Kivell said during a presentation comparing statistical data com- piled in 1991, 1992 and the first month of 1993 by the Halton Regional Police Service. During Kivell's presentation, council also heard the number of reported crimes dropped by 5.5% from 1991 to 1992. He attributed the drop in reported crimes to the success of police crime pre- vention programs, as well as support from community groups and local media which help raise the public 's awareness about crime. The number of reported crimes in Oakville dropped by 6.8% in January of 1993, compared to the same month last year, Oakville town council was told Monday night. "For each new crime, there's another drain of services. Ideally, we try to bring down those statistics," he said. As examples, Kivell cited the force's focus on reducing the incidents of destruction to property by educating youths about drug abuse, as well as educat- ing potential victims of crimes on personal safety. Kivell said statistics for February of 1993 would be available later in the week. Kivell said the police force focuses on programs and community initiatives aimed at crime prevention so that its resources aren't depleted on investigations after the crimes have already been committed. Nothing was sacred when it came to the theft of $2,500 worth of audio equipment from St. Michael's Church last week. A M-year-old Oakville man is now facing charges. Halton Regional Police Acting Det. Sgt. Carey Smith said the theft occurred during daylight hours Fri. March 19th and an arrest was made on Sunday. Smith said the pastor at St. Michael's Church on Sewell Drive report- ed to police that approximately $2,500 worth of audio equipment had been stolen. The equipment included four microphones and connecting cables, a keyboard and an amplifier. Police have recovered the stolen property. Facing a charge of theft over $1,000 and possession of stolen property over $1,000 is David Charles Ray, 25, of Elm Road. Ray is slated to appear in Oakville Provincial Court April 27th.
