In Service â€" ILharland Share leam. "Growing up in Oakville, you realize how privileged you are. In university things become more self involved, and now I want to give something back to those who are not as fortunate as myself," says Broten. From May 6th to July 6th, the Thailand Share Team will be workâ€" ing at Pakkred Children‘s Home for physically and mentally handiâ€" capped children in greater Bangkok. By ROSS POLLOCK Special to the Beaver Student‘s holidays spent on helping Thai children At the same meeting last week, representatives of the Oakville Transit workers union said the taxi company‘s proposal is a move tc take over a service currently provided by the town‘s Careâ€"Aâ€"Van. Earl Fenton, a regular user of the town told the committee the taxiâ€"cabs will provide wheelchair users during the evenings and we She said the units â€" which will cost around $35,000 each â€" will be dispatched like regular taxis but with priority to providing special service to seniors and the physically challenged. If all goes well, Halton Taxi will have the vehicles running by May 1st. said Blake. The Ministry of Transportation provides funding of $10,000 per vehicle to offset the costs of purchasing the specially equipped taxi cabs. Blake said the company will run two wheelchair accessible vehicles, seven days a week, 24 hours a day, which charge the same tariff as regular taxiâ€"cabs. 10 Oakville town council has voted to amend the town‘s taxi bylaw to permit the operation of two wheelchair accessible taxi cabs. The move clears the way for Halton Taxi, which owns and operâ€" ates 17 taxi cabs within the town, to transfer two of its taxi plates to wheelchair accessible vehicles. In all, the town licenses a total of 45 taxi cabs, the majority of which are independently owned and operated. The wheelchair accessible vehicles will be used to provide wheelchair accessible taxiâ€"cab service to Oakville‘s seniors and physically challenged, Halton Taxi‘s managing director Doreen Blake told the town‘s administrative services committee last week. CHANTEL BROTEN JICTORY OFFER!!! ekend Vj arc le iltern Growing up in Oakville, you realize how priviâ€" leged you are." n 1993 V Broten first became interested in International Development when she started attending meetings of the International Development Club at Guelph University. "My interest was peaked, so I had to find out more about it and see if I could help." The club organizes fundraisers to assist projects in South America. A St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School graduate, Broten is in her third year at the University of Guelph studying kinesiology. As part of their commitment to the program, each team member is responsible for raising $2,500 towards the cost of the mission. This would enable the team to bring supplies over with them. Besides donations, team members are trying to raise funds by selling tâ€"shirts and organizing bingos and car washes. The six week program in Thailand will help Broten decide whether or not she will make a longer term commitment to internaâ€" tional development in the future. The 30â€"member team includes a Pharmacist, Pediatric Nurse and an Engineer, as well as a group of stuâ€" dents. They will be helping with priâ€" mary health care, occupational therâ€" apy and development of life skills. Many of the children at Pakkred have habilitation potential, but lack the opportunity to learn attainable skills due to a limited staff who lack basic training. fortunate 1@nt Domestic Pasta Product of Chile Fresh Sweet Green Thompson Side Bacon come mort Schneider‘s sliced Regular +Lifestyle Product of U.S.A.
