"We can‘t deny the fact that everybody drinks, that it goes on." says John. "But it really is a shock to the system to, in some cases, touch and feel and speak directly with people who have been in accidents where alcohol was involved. They, themselves, might not have been drinking, but someâ€" one who hit them might have been. I think it really makes our students think twice about the whole issue. When I was younger, it wasn‘t really something that we thought about. But this program brings drinking and driving to the fore and makes thinking about it a priority, especially on weekends. That‘s why this program is purâ€" posely done on a Friday, so that kids will think about it on the weekend." His girlfriend, asleep at the time, went through the front windâ€" screen and was discovered some 50 feet from the scene with severe head injuries that caused a comâ€" plete loss of memory. Frank was left with a badly broken arm and leg which doctors had to mend with steel screws and plates. The driver of the other car died instantly, and Frank insists it was the air bag in his own car that saved his life. One of these patients, Frank, remembers nothing about the acciâ€" dent that almost claimed his life. He and his girlfriend were driving through Kentucky one recent New Year‘s Eve â€" on their way home from a vacation in California â€" when a drunk driver smashed into their car. When we walked into a room, you could hear a pin drop and everybody kind of took a step backwards until the guide said, "Relax, it‘s alright, so and so‘s here for you," John explains. Offered as part of Sunnybrook PARTY (Prevent Alcohol and Riskâ€"Related Trauma in Youth) program, the day includes presenâ€" tations by a paramedic and emerâ€" gency room doctor; a tour of the facility that traces the steps of an actual patient from arrival through the trauma room, I.C.U., critical care and rehabilitation; and visits with patients recovering from spinal cord injuries. The PARTY program actually goes beyond drinking and driving to include general safety considerâ€" ations and avoid head and spine injuries, regardless of how they‘re sustained. Another one of the patients students met had an acciâ€" dent while riding his bicycle, sufâ€" fering severe head injuries that were to deprive him of his memoâ€" ry for 11 years. "It‘s those basic little things you would teach a small child," says John. "But when you see the consequences, and hear from peoâ€" ple firsthand who have had those experiences and are there because they want to help other people â€" they all volunteer to do this â€" you realize that they are giving up a little piece of themselves just for you. And that‘s a pretty nice feelâ€" ing." John‘s class did a followâ€"up assignment after they returned to school, which asked how students would stop their friends from drinking and driving. "I got some excellent responses, from the desâ€" ignated driver situation to keeping the keys at the door, or having an open relationship where kids could call their parents when they Phys.
