Area citizens turned out to planâ€" ning and development council Monday night to voice their concerns over the hospital‘s plans, even though council was told a rezoning applicaâ€" tion from the hospital for the site won‘t be forthcoming for two more months. After making most of the arrangements to bring her home, the Groves were told there were no beds available at OTMH until Tuesday (vesterday). But OTMH president Dieter Kuntz said this changed on Saturday. "We told the family that we school property. ‘"We want to know the zoning is there," Kuntz said. However, Kuntz said the hospital has no plans to develop the property for at least 10 more vears. ‘‘The (provincial) government will be working with us over the next few vears on longâ€"term care," he said. Kuntz said it would be "pure conâ€" jecture" for the hospital to predict what the province‘s requirements for longâ€"term care facilities will be in 10 years or more, making it difficult for the hospital to provide a design of what it plans to build on the site, he said. In the meantime, Kuntz said the hospital would use part of the high school for its own use and invited community agencies to lease space in the building. MacDonald Street resident Colin Hardman questioned why the hospital is in such a hurry to complete the rezoning when it doesn‘t plan on building a facility for at least 10 more vears. In an effort to force the issue, the Groves approached the Oakville Beaver and the Toronto Star. Shortly after the Beaver story hit the streets on Saturday Ted Groves began receivâ€" ing supportive phonecalls from friends and even health care workers at the hospital. "I went to the hospital and some nurses and doctors congratuated me. Can you believe it?" said Grove. ‘"They feel as if their hands have been tied by the autocraftic way in would make the first bed available to them," said Kuntz. "On Saturday we had an unexpected discharge (of a patient) by one of our physicians and we contacted the family." Hardman also wondered what would happen to the site if the hospiâ€" tal doesn‘t follow through with its interim plan. He suggested the hospiâ€" tal take over maintenance of a soccer field on the site and make it available to the community. ‘"Why can‘t it be delayed until there‘s something tangible on paper?" he asked. Allan Street resident Russ Robertson said residents shouldn‘t have to put up with the uncertainty surrounding the hospital‘s plans for the site, which could result in a drop in property values in the area. "If we face this property for 10 years and the hospital is without a plan, the property values will fall and neighborhood will become a mess," he said. Robertson said the town should ask the hospital to "back off" on its rezoning application pending a comâ€" prehensive plan for development in the area. "I‘m a little embarrassed and ashamed it had to come to this. It‘s shameful when you have to resort to this," said Grove. At around 12 noon on Saturday Ted Grove called his wife Anne in Tucson who immediately set the transfer plan in motion. John Ghent, the town‘s manager of current planning, told council the hospital‘s rezoning application may have to be handled a little differently than other applications. He said the hospital‘s offer of purâ€" chase and sale on the property, which expires in March of 1994, is continâ€" gent on the town rezoning the properâ€" ty. In effect, the town would be approving the rezoning without a site plan for the development, he said. ‘"Development of the site would not be forthcoming immediately. We would be taking the rezoning applicaâ€" tion at face value and we would be back to council with the details if necessary," he said. He said the town could impose certain development standards on the site then require the hospital to develâ€" op a design within those standards.
