By TOM MICHIBATA akville Beaver staff All three of the Oakvilleâ€"based West Side Volleyball Club teams will do battle in UOntario championship tournaments, this fveekend in Oakville. The No. 1â€" ranked midgets, featuring local blayers John Alexiou, Ian Harris, Nick Rupcich, Tyler Proctor and Michael Maclsaac, will play at Sheridan College‘s J.M. The juveniles and juniors will both comâ€" pete in the junior championships at Oakville rafalgar High School, tonight (Friday, 7 .m. to 9 p.m.) and tomorrow (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Daniel Lewis and Vijay Vyas are the locals on the juvenile squad while Patrick Rangers capture league crown Oakville Royal Life Rangers and Barrie tied 6â€"6 in in the fifth game of their peewee playoff game last week at Maple Grove Arena. But that point was all Oakville needed to claim the sixâ€"point GCentral AAA Hockey League championship series, 6â€"2. Scoring for the Rangers were Adam Richards, with a natural hat trick, Jeff Wilson, Andre Kalata and Kirk Joudrey. Mike Muldoon set up five of the goals. Jeff Kubacki and Wilson had two assists each, Scott Nelson, Chad Blundy and Sasha Frankovic. Todd McNaught went the disâ€" tance in goal. Rangers were upset in the firstâ€" round of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoffs but coach Bob Kapustik said the Central AAA crown, coupled with winning the consolation AA title at the prestiâ€" grous Quebec International Tournament last month, was a rewarding way to end the year. "The boys have a lot to be proud of," he said. "They accomplished a lot this year." GIRLS Oakville bantam girls lost 1â€"0 to Byrlington before defeating Brampton 4â€"2 in league play. "I think we have a solid chance," said midget coach Fred Folliott, a former assistant who took over the head coaching duties from Woo Chang Kim about a monthâ€"andâ€"aâ€"half ago when the latter left for family reasons. The midgets have won two events â€" the Midget Challenge earlier this month, and the Flower City Invitational in Rochester, N.Y., at the beginning of the season. "My only instructions to them are play volleyball," Folliott said. "They‘ve practised hard all year." Folliott says the team‘s defence is as good, if not better, than last year‘s midget outfit thanks to the expertise of Kim, a defensive specialist. Under Folliott the offence is gainâ€" ing diversification. Host Oakville teams eye provincial volleyball championships Alexiou is the firstâ€"string setter. Rupcich, at middle, MacIsaac (backup setter), Harris (weakside) and Proctor (power) will also see action. Playing in an age group above them, the juveniles are using this weekend as a tuneup for their own provincial championships, April 17â€"18 in Kitchener. Still, the juveniles have been more than holding their own at the junior level and hold the No. 3 ranking. "It‘s important the team not focus on the tournament as an epitome of how it‘s playâ€" ing," explained juvenile coach John Burt of Oakville. "I want them to get court play. I want them peaking two weeks from now. "We want to get back to basics â€" get everything flowing," said Lewis, a starting outside hitter...We know we can do it."
