At the last board meeting, Milton trustee Bob Clarke asked trustees to reconsider the ban. "This motion is not intended to preclude the use of paper cups but rather allow schools flexibility in their choice," said Clarke at last week‘s board meeting. Trustees agreed to authorize board staff to compile a study on the potential change and that report is expected to be ready by late April. "All I wanted to do is give administration the option. If it‘s more efficient and complies with all our environmental policies....It‘s nothing earth shattering, it just gives them the option," said Clarke. Ward 1 trustee Lynne Clark said the board voted hastily when it first voted to ban polystyrene and trustees should avoid putting themâ€" selves in the same situation again. Several years ago the board banned the use of polystyrene conâ€" tainers and stopped purchasing the materials. Coffee was consumed by board staff and visitors in paper cups or personal mugs. But, pointed out Clarke, polystyrene is now recyclable. Diane LeClaire, a Halton resiâ€" dent, parent and procurement manâ€" ager for the Canadian Polystyrene Recycling Association (CPRA) was at Thursday‘s board meeting to set the record straight. LeClaire told trustees CPRA has an 80,000 sq. ft., stateâ€"ofâ€"theâ€"art Mississauga plant for recyling, is a nonâ€"profit organization with 28 member companies, including McDonald‘s Restaurants of Canada, Ltd. other fast food companies and some major petroâ€"chemical compaâ€" nies. "We would like to demonstrate that polystyrene can and is being recycled in an environmentally responsible manner," said LeClaire. Trustees heard that polystyrene is being recycled into viable materiâ€" als used to produce office supplies, CD and cassette cases, horticultural products and industrial compoâ€" nents. LeClaire also said that compaâ€" nies don‘t have to be a member of CPRA to use the recycling facility and said there is curbside pickâ€"up of polystyrene products in Halton.
