Mackenzie would never have achieved his goal had he not gone back to school. Sure it’s hard work, so is paddling, but look at the pay- offs,” said Queen Elizabeth Park Chevalier, a second year Lakehead adventure in the learning process. Authentic in every way, the pro- ject involves paddling down more than 3000 miles of waterways from Lachine, Quebec, to the Rockies and then an overland trek of 17 days to the Pacific. The final leg of the journey, from Peace River, Alberta, to Mackenzie Rock, will take two months and cover 2000 km. It began by following Mackenzie’s first and ill fated trip, when a navigational error resulted in his heading north to the Arctic instead of west to the Pacific. In 1991, the modern voyageurs trav- elled from Lachine to Winnipeg, 1992 took them from Peace River Lakehead University and the Alexander Mackenzie Trail Association, along with support from the federal governments Stay in School initiative, began the reâ€" enactment project five years ago. After the showing, a luncheon will be held to honor the recipients of the Environmental Leadership Awards. Last year, Regional Chairman, Peter Pomeroy presented 15 schools with awards for their exceptional environmental leader- ship. “Blue Planet,” examines the forces that affect our planet internal- ly and externally, while “Antarctica” explores the environmental happen- ings of the Antarctic. To reward the outstanding achievements of those who have participated in environmental or conservation projects at their schools, 75 schools in the region will be sending over 400 students to the Ontario Place Cinesphere for a special screening of “Blue Planet” and “Antarctica”. The awards are given to students and teachers who show exceptional environmental leadership in the community. In celebration of Earth Day, the Waste Reduction Department of Halton Region, Halton Public and Roman Catholic School Boards, in conjunction with area businesses, will present the 1993 Environmental Leadership Awards,April 20th at Ontario Place. The expedition, Canada Sea-to- Sea, is supported by the Minister of State for Youth and the Canada Employment and Immigration Commission, and is representing the federal Stay in School campaign in battling the 30 percent dropout rate from secondary schools. The team will visit thousands of school chil- dren, encouraging youth to follow through with their education, leav- ing doors 'open for the future. Halton giving out environment awards As a part of the trip, the voyageurs have visited hundreds of schools and held public per- formances to . sharpen aware- PATTY CHEVALIER ness about Canadian history and, using Mackenzie as an example, to emphasize the importance of stay- ing in school. After his navigational error, Mackenzie returned to England for further training in geography and astronomy. and this year they will com- plete the voyage.
