Meals on Wheels feeds body and soul Growing old is a strange experi- ence. For most of your life, you notice the aged around you, but somehow you never quite believe you’ll ever be one of them. True â€" you begin to avoid watching your- self totter past shop windows, and when you sink yourself to the odd Volunteers and clients enjoy and evening out together. Visiting volunteers from Halton Helping Hands also pro- vide assistance with shopping and errands while developing friendships with their clients. Home Support to elderly, disabled Anyone who is elderly, or has parents or friends who are seniors should know about Halton Helping Hands. This charitable, social service agency provides Home Support to the elderly and physically disabled residents of Oakville so that they may live independently as long as safely possible. Volunteers are a most important part of the service delivery team at Halton Helping Hands. In Oakville, over 70 volunteers, varying in age from teens to seniors, provide a wide variety of assistance â€" volunteers visit, shop, run errands, do minor handyman repairs, help with raking leaves and shovelling snow etc ..... all those maintenance tasks that are difficult or impossible for the clients to do. w During National Volunteer Week, Halton Helping Hands officially says thank you to these caring and dedicated people. But, throughout the year, their contributions of time and talent are appreciated. The clients are con- tinually amazed at the wonderful people who come to help them voluntari- 1y I! If you would like more information about the services available, or are interested in volunteering with Halton Helping Hands, please contact Karen Pipes, coordinator. of Volunteer Services at 844- 0252. But when one day it dawns on you that you can no longer cook your own food, then you know you’re not just old you’_re o-o-oâ€"o-old! v Now, that’s a problem! The trou- ble is that you want so badly to hold SE 8650 ‘ V on to your independence, and how can you do that if you can’t even peel a potato? That’s when you might consider giving up the ghost for good. There’s a certain perverse charm in the picture of all your friends crying their eyes out around your emaciated cadaver after you’ve just died of starvation. Trouble is, you’re going tobe awfully hungry before you get to that point. Well cheer up! There’s a great way out._ When I was faced with this prob- lem â€" having lost the use of my right hand in my late seventies â€"- Meals On Wheels came to my res- cue, and they have been looking after me ever since. In the ensuing years, through every kind of weath- er and emergency, the meals I have missed could be counted on the fin- gers of one hand and the way I’ve been pampered, you wouldn't believe! They make notes of the things I don’t like, sort out the dish- es that are awkward for me, and even cut up the things that I might not be able to manage for myself. All that is wonderful, but it is how the volunteers do these things that means so much. ‘Patronizing’ is simply not in their repertory. I’m not just a hungry old woman. To them, I’m a person, and they not only feed me, they talk to me about all sorts of things anything from make-up to Mulroney. (Guess which is most fun!) They are a godsend to me and to the many others with both long and short-term difficulties. Believe me, if we were to lose our friends of Meals On Wheels, we would be hungry for very, very much more than just food. They have our sin- cere and affectionate thanks.
