The food is a blend of Mediterranean and Middleâ€" Eastern fare, and the decor has a casual, European flair. Welcome to one of Oakville‘s newest restaurantsâ€"Montfort. Since opening in March, this small and busy cafe tucked in a plaza on Iroquois Shore Rd. has been packing in the customers. Owner Bishara Arraf says he is very pleased with the rapid response from the community which he feels is partly because people are looking for new and different choices. The menu he has put together represents a blend of many culâ€" tures ranging from Lebanese to Turkish, with some French and Italian accents thrown in. "I tried to choose the best items from difâ€" ferent cultures using the foods I know best," Arraf explains. The result is a menu that features such specialties as Shawarma, a tradiâ€" tional Lebanese meat dish, Shashlik, a grilled pork dish from the Holy Land, kabobs from Turkey, Falafel and tabouleh from the Mediterranean, and the house specialty, Montfort chicken. The decor of the restaurant is a very casual, cateâ€"style with an open kitchen where customers can watch their Shawarma roasting on a spit. It is a style that reflects Arraf‘s background in the restauâ€" rant business in Europe. Although born in Galilee, Arraf lived for many years in Amsterdam where his family owns cight restaurants. He came to Canada in 1991 when he became engaged to a Canadian girl and decided to return for good when they marâ€" return TOr & ried in 1992 #* restaurant 1s a stvle with an Arraf says he see country with great and he feels simila chosen community His longâ€"term goal, trv to work with jazz weekend that will draw peoâ€" ple into the community. Above all, he says, it is important that people in the business work together to create a vibrant comâ€" munity. In Holland, he explains, it is more commonplace for restaurant owners to work together to proâ€" mote events that stimulate busiâ€" ness and benefit everyone. In Canada, on the other hand, he sees a tendency for businesses to work against each other by always trying to undercut the competition‘s prices. "This just leads to a lowering of quality which doesn‘t help anyone‘s repâ€" utation," he argues. Montfort is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. and on weekâ€" ends until 3 a.m. According to Arraf, the hours have already proven popular with many cusâ€" tomers who are happy to be able to get some good food in the wee hours. This is something which is taken for granted in Europe, and which he says he is happy to proâ€" vide for his Oakville clientele.
