Appleby students give 2,000 hours per year 18 The OTMH Auxiliary has more than 700 members that help out in over 20 areas of the hospital. This dedicated group of men and women share their talents and their enthusiasm in many different departments including: The theme for volunteer appreciation week this year is "OTMH Volunteers â€" Our Building Blocks". The hospital has chosen this theme because it helps to convey how important our volunteers are to the hospital. Volunteers provided the foundation for the hospital in its early days, and they continue to support our structure in a wide variety of ways today. As the hospital builds for the future, the volunteers â€" amidst the inconveâ€" niences sometimes caused by construction â€" continue to provide their loyal support. d visit, they sew They greet people, they transport people, they chat an h . and meyng, |‘.he)F'>c cx?ddle children, they serve tea, they compile and del.II\;er charts, and they do much, much more â€" the volunteers at the Oakv.l eâ€" Trafalgar Memorial Hospital touch many lives. Students at Appleby College cerâ€" tainly know the value of volunteerâ€" ing; they regularly clock up a miniâ€" mum of 2,000 hours of community service in a school year at several of Oalg{ille’s needy agencies. The Diagnostic Imaging department recently began using its new Color Doppler Ultrasound machine. The Auxiliary raised the funds necessary to purchase this important piece of equipment that assists in painless, speedy, and accuâ€" rate diagnosis. The Candystripers â€" the youngest group of volunteers â€" bring a youthful enthusiasm to their work at the hospital, They can be found reading to patients, helping with bedmaking, carrying and collecting meal trays, disâ€" tributing menus, attending to flowers, delivering mail, and helping with errands. Many of these local high school students are planning to pursue careers in health care, and see volunteering as a way to make a difference to people while gaining valuable exposure to the health care professions. He estimates that one in four Appleby students is currentâ€" ly participating in some form of community service; making it the school‘s most extensive extracurricâ€" ular activity. Thirty hours of service earns a student one mandatory activity credit (two in Grades 9 and 10), and many more are also active in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Dependent upon the generosity of parents for transportation, Landry encourages any group locatâ€" ed a reasonable distance from the College to contact him at (416) 845â€" 4681. This year, however, Appleby‘s Dean of Students and community service coordinator, Norm Landry, says he has had trouble finding enough organizations to place all 125 students. Now looking to the coming school year, Norm says he will need several other agencies who can utilize the students‘ time after the beginning of October. Boys and girls from Grade 8:to OAC could be available for one and a half to two hours, four evenings a week (Monday to Thursday). Oakville Big Sisters would love to hear from all Big and Little Sisters "alumni" and volunteers who might have stories, phoâ€" tographs, etc. to share or who would like to be involved in the 25thl anniversary celebrations. Over the last 25 years hundreds of caring and dedicated women have invested in this community‘s future by taking the time to listen and provide emotional support, to share skills and interests, encourage dreams and expand horizons. Others contributed time and talent to ensure the necessary resources are available to continue responding to the unique changing needs of girls. There has been much positive change on the ‘status of women‘ over the last 25 years. Yet for many girls, personal and economic barriâ€" ers to achieving their full potential still very much exist. Volunteers continue to be the ‘backbone,‘ proâ€" viding the support needed to help Little Sisters deal with challenges in their lives. This year as the Oakville Big Sisters marks its 25th anniversary, we want to say a special and heartâ€" felt ‘thankâ€"you‘ to all those who have helped make a difference in the lives of countless young girls! over the years. The history of community ("social") service is largely the hisâ€" tory of women volunteers reaching out to those in need â€" in this case young women. Long before we heard phrases like "equal opportuniâ€" ty", "health promotion" and "preâ€" vention", Big Sister volunteers were addressing these issues, one child at a time, through friendship with a Little Sister. 4 Appleby Outreach â€" the umbrelâ€" la name under which most commuâ€" nity service activities are conducted at the school â€" originally began sevâ€" eral years ago as a means of fundraising in the lower grades. Now, Landry says, "The service arm of Outreach has become bigger than the fundraising. I‘m proud to see it grow. It means a lot to these kids to get:involved in the commuâ€" nity in nonâ€"material ways, and they soon realize that giving their time is much more important than giving their money." Oakville Big Sisters celebrate 25th anniversary program and go far beyond that number. In 1967, the federal government established the Royal Commission on the Status of Women. At the same time, a small group of comâ€" mitted and visionary women met in the home of Glenna Soanes in Oakville to share their concerns about the difficulties and challenges being faced by some of the young girls in this community. A year later, in 1968, the Oakville Big Sister Association was born.
