Over three million civilians and about two-thirds of the law enforcement agencies drive the full-size, rear- wheel-drive car known for afford- able luxury and dependable service. For 1993, the number of Caprice on the road will continue to swell, but the look will change - a little. Style goes back to future GM designers have used a design theme from the fashion, fur- niture and architectural industries to restyle the rear end of the Caprice sedan. Essentially, GM took Caprice's look into the future by bringing back the best of the past. This detailing included opening up the rear wheel wells, revising tail- lamps and in general, emphasizes the rear wheel wells, revising tail- lamps and in general, emphasizes the "horizontal" look from the rear. This freshening affects all three sedans. the Caprice Classic (former- ly called Caprice), the uplevel Caprice Classic LS (a new designa- tion), and the Caprice Classic LTZ option package, and readily allows the use of the Classic name on all versions. Though the wagon's styling is unchanged from 1992, it does get woodgrain applique for 1993 (if that's your choice) and will come only as the Caprice Classic. The original draft of this current sedan style is what most recently thrust Caprice into the spotlight - and also into several winners cir- cles. Caprice's, aerodynamic exteri- or styling captured the attention of the automotive media and the pub- lic alike. Awards are not new for Caprice, of course. since it's picked up numerous kudos during its 27-year lifespan, including lots of "best buy" ratings from consumer publi- cations and two prestigious Car of the Year Awards from Motor Trend Magazine - the most recent of which was bestowed on the 1991 Caprice Classic LTZ sedan. But the stylists were not the only GM people working to refine the Caprice for 1993; the engineers were also hard at work. Their achievements include mak- ing the lSO-horsepower, 5.7L V8 the standard powerplant on the Classic LTZ (up from the 5.0L that powers the other sedans in the line), adding more acoustical insulation to further reduce engine, wind and road noise, and installing new inte- rior fabrics and trim for all models. Not to be overlooked is the rea- son for Caprice's legendary ride - full-coil suspension. rear-wheel- For 1993 the Hyundai Scoupe has been upgraded with a new, more powerful engine. Scoupe receives the "Alpha" engine, a 12-valve, four-cylinder unit of 1.5-litres displacement. Last year's engine was also a 1.5 which gave 82 hp. The new motor pumps out 92 hp in standard trim or 115 hp with a tur-l bocharger. l The base Scoupe lists at $10,995; the up-trimmed LS at $12,495; and the Turbo is $13,795. The "Turbo Package" also comes with special sea and cloth trim, sport suspension, "unique" badging, front fog lamps, an leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Inside and outside a number of changes have been made. The exterior " similar but it has been muscled up in appearance, particularly on the LS and Turbo with side mouldings and a nice set of alloy wheels. I drove both all models of both cars recently on an excursion up to Lake Simcoe and back. The Turbo was noticeably quicker than the base model.i It was fast enough to just stay ahead of the 124 hp, 1.8-litre equipped Elantra. In many ways it felt like the base version of the Honda Civic del Sol. Handling was not as crisp but acceleration with the Turbo was the same and interior dimensions were also similar. As in all Hyundais, the car has a transversely mounted engine at the front driving the front wheels. The Scoupe has a new five-speed transaxle. You can get a four-speed automatic on the base and LS but not the Turbo. Considering price, Scoupe continues to be the price leader in the sport car class and now has much-needed power to keep up with its rivals. Suspension on the Scoupe is MacPherson struts and coils at the front with trailing arms at the rear. . Hyundai gives Scoupe a boost under the hood 1993 Caprice Classic LTZ Sedan Chevrolet Caprice 1993 Hyundai Scoupe drive, and full-perimeter steel frame. With plenty of room inside for six passengers, it has plenty for North American tastes, especially when the drive might mean two or three days on the road and two or three months of luggage packed behind you. Other changes to Caprice include gold accents on the LS, a power window lockout switch added to the drive's door, ScotchgardTM Fabric Protector now on the carpets and floormats, and four new exterior colours. All Caprice models still come with an impressive array of stan- dard equipment that includes ' wheel anti-lock brakes, a driver's- side airbag, air conditioning, a Tilt- Wheel adjustable steering column, intermittent wipers, tinted glass, rear-door child-security locks, and an AM/FM stereo radio with digital clock. Caprice Classic LS offers M additional equipment the auto-dim- ming inside rearview elec- trochromic mirror, up-level 55/45 split-bench seat, power windows and more. The 5.7L LTZ Caprice package answers the question, "can a full size sedan please the driving enthu- siast?" This option gives you a Sport suspension, Eagle GT+4 tires, limited-slip rear axle, heavy-duty frame, brakes, and cooling and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. They can also haul a whopping Out of uniform, the Caprice is' popular with families and "empty nest" couples. both of whom appre- ciates its roominess, comfort and safety features. 2,624L (92.7 cu. ft.) of cargo. The 5.7L V8, automatic rear level con- trol and a trailer towing package with a hauling capacity of up to 2,268 kg (5,000 lb.) can be ordere4. In uniform, for many of the same reasons, Caprice is the sedan of choice for police and taxi services., This dual personality is a testament to Caprice's reliability and durabili- ty. No matter what duty it draws, Caprice is greatly appreciated by its users. In J.D. Power's survey of I992 New Car Initial Quality Study, Caprice was named "Best in Class" by the prestigious quality measure- ment corporation, beating out not only its arch-rivals from Ford (the Crown Victoria) and Mercury (the Grand Marquis), but also such luxu- ry cars as the BMW 525i and 735i, the Lincoln Continental and Mark VII, and the Mercedes-Benz 190, 300/500SL, and S-Class sedans. _ r A 3"†"fs “I -s Wggxmiit, "ciXAt',ert,
