Coâ€"operative learning should not be confused with coâ€"operative educaâ€" tion which sees students working at local businesses as part of their school program. When they were "empty vessels" into which knowledge was poured, of "factory model" schools which led many to drop out to secure blueâ€"colâ€" lar jobs where they were expected to follow orders, conform and earn a decent living. "It‘s getting at other skills we need. It deals with interpersonal skills so instead of just listening and spitâ€" ting back information, students learn to communicate and get along with others," said Gregory. "No one strategy serves everyone equally well. Cooperative learning serves more people, better," said Woodland. Gregory noted fewer students are dropping out of school which proâ€" vides a greater challenge to engage and include them all. "It means changes for teachers, students and parents. There have to be times like this when we can talk about it and express our frustrations because our shared goals are for the kids," said Gregory. Cooperative group learning isn‘tâ€" the only teaching method used in Halton classrooms. It is used when appropriate, and other methods, including the traditional Socratic method of "desks in rows", are still Many parents feared teachers were abdicating their responsibilities and were leaving students to both teach and learn â€" impossible, they felt, at young ages. Other concerns spoke to the need for more teaching assistants â€" someâ€" thing not currently available in the board‘s budget, said Ward 1 trustee Lynne Clark. While some parents left voicing concerns that school officials hadn‘t really "listened" to their concerns, the officials pointed to the research, the need to accept change and a plea for parents to divorce themselves from their own school days experiences. "It isn‘t a loose process, it‘s very structured," assured Gregory of the parent concerns that children weren‘t getting the teacher attention they may It helps build positive attitudes and behaviors, responsibility, adaptability and teamwork skills as well as acaâ€" demics â€" all sought by future employâ€" ers, according to the Conference Board of Canada. sonal skills needed in today‘s rapidly changing work places and multiculturâ€" al society. The new teaching style â€" used in Halton since 1988, opens the door for development of the five other recogâ€" nized "intelligences" including: intrapersonal ("inner" thinking); interâ€" personal (personâ€"toâ€"person communiâ€" cation); visual/spatial (the ability to see and create mental images); body/kinesthetic (physical movement and knowing the body); and musical/rhythmic intelligence (recogâ€" nition of tonal patterns, sounds and rhythm). One parent related her own son‘s experience with group learning which, after eight weeks of work on informaâ€" tion gathering, failed an 80â€"minute comprehensive test on a unit because all the information he needed to know wasn‘t contained in his group‘s sumâ€" Cooperative group learning also allows for the development of everyâ€" one‘s "multiple intelligences" which contrasts to the traditional school focus on verbal/linguistic intelligence and logical/mathematical intelligence. About two dozen parents were at Eastview and many raised questions and did not seem convinced the new teaching style works in practice.
