By HOWARD MOZEL Oakville Beaver Staff [Â¥ J hile the drastic cuts proâ€" posed for GO Transit ~ will inconvenience some people, most of those who use the service will not be affected says a spokesman for the beleaâ€" guered system. Despite the multiâ€"million dollar costâ€"cutting measures initiated by the province, GO manager of information services Tom Henry said the communities to be sevâ€" ered from full service â€" such as Burlington, Barrie and Guelph â€" account for only 15% of total ridâ€" ership. GO Transit will cut full service to West Oakville "The bottom line here is that 85% â€" the vast majority â€" of comâ€" muters will still have a train," said Henry. "And where there isn‘t a train we will put a bus." Last week, as part of its costâ€" cutting package, the province specifically directed GO Transit to shave $6.5 million worth of serâ€" vices from existing routes. To local residents, this means all weekday and weekend service on the Lakeshore line west will end at the Cross Avenue GO station (the east line ends at Pickering) leavâ€" ing commuters who would norâ€" mally use the Oakville West staâ€" tion at Bronte Road â€" and the Burlington stations â€" to continue home by bus. Trains will proceed to Burlington in the west and Whitby in the east only during rush hour. Reduced service is expected to take effect July 3, says Henry, after GO has time to implement new trainâ€"bus schedules and staffing requirements. According to the spokesman, the system will save $2.2 million on the total eastâ€"west Lakeshore line for the remaining nine months of the fiscal year. As of press time, however, he did know what would be the impact of the Oakvilleâ€" Burlington cuts alone. Hesaid reaction to the announced cuts has been mixed. "There has not been a huge response. It‘s been rather varied," Thieves steal $73,000 BMW A brand new $73,000 BMW automobile was stolen from the lot of BMW of Oakville last weekend. Halton Regional Police report the thief smashed the driver‘s side window to get into the fourâ€"door, black luxury car described as being in excellent condition. Brand new, the car had no licence plates, said Acting Det. Sgt. Peter Hodgson. Police said the car disappeared from the lot of BMW of Oakville, at 2400 South Service Road near the QEW and Bronte Road someâ€" time between Saturday, April 24 and Monday, April 26. "A lot of people I‘ve spoken to are saying it had to hapâ€" pen. If you have to cut, this is a place to start." Provincial grants account for $80 million of GO Transit‘s $180 million operating budget. Burlington politicians are parâ€" ticularly outraged at losing full service, which was implemented there only last year. City officials â€" as well as those from Halton Region â€" are planning to make their displeasure known to the province in no uncertain terms. According to Henry, though, the odds of the reduced services being reinstated are "very very low." The truncated Lakeshore line is only the tip of the iceberg, howevâ€" er. While low ridership was the reason given for chopping service to Barrie and Guelph, other areas are simply victims of funding. After July 3 no trains from Toronto‘s Union Station to Bradford will continue on to Barrie. All four trains on the Georgetown line will end at Georgetown. At present one of the four links with Barrie. Like comâ€" muters in â€" Oakville "and Burlington, the gaps will be filled through the use of buses. from 1151 South Service Road
