In addition to providing fruit trees, Trees for Life also supplies, bee hives, fuel efficient stoves, funding, and "knowledge to the vil- agers in Third World countries to help them learn to plant trees for emselves and subsequently pass the know-how on to others. "In this way they provide a source of food for themselves while learning to become happier by :being more self-sufficient," said IZaidi, who grew up in India and Zaidi, who hails from India. has 'seen first hand the devastation caused by a lack of trees. Having read about the international non- profit Trees for Life program based in Wichita, Kansas, established in 1984 by Balbir Mathur, who also came from India, the Ancaster woman decided to get involved. Mathur, at times referred to as 'the tree mam' believed world hunger could be overcome by planting fruit trees - their frun could feed the hungry. For example, one papaya tree can produce up to 300 pounds of fruit after the first year of growth. "During every minute of the day, 28 children starve to heath." states Zaidi. To date, athur has provided 826,000 tree planting kits to elementary school children across the United States, and more than 10 million trees have been planted in India, Nepal, Guatemala, Brazil and Kenya. Lightbourn, Linbrook, Munn's, Brantwood. and Eastview. Since establishing Trees for Life Canada in July 1991, Zaidi has made contact with more than 40 school boards, involving the partici- pation of over 45,000 children who planted about a million seeds - 400,000 red pine, 400,000 Norfolk spruce, and 200,000 honey locust. She would like to increase that par- ticipation to 200,000 children plant- ting four to five seeds each next year. Along with the Grow-A-Thee kits comes with teachers' manuals and activity books for the children, teaching them about the importance of planting trees. Zaidi and her small army of volunteers speak in classrooms, and are available to speak to any interested groups. Sixteen students of the Fashion agement and Computer Design 'echniques program will showcase eir Fall '93 and Spring '94 collec- ions of women, men and children's ear in a 45-minute runway show. Did you know that 500,000 trees are being cut down every hour of the day? When the land is depleted of trees. our environment becomes unbalanced. Without an environmentally balanced planet, we have little hope for survival of all life. For exam- ple, the air that we breathe becomes more polluted due to the increasing amount of car- bon dioxide in the air. Trees are essential to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen. Animal species are threatened with loss of food and shelter.
